MediaTek's new Dimensity 6400 brings a small upgrade over the 6300 from last year

Chipset genealogy is a weird hobby, but sometimes new chipsets require us to do some digging. With that in mind, the new Dimensity 6400 chipset from MediaTek arrives as a light refresh of the Dimensity 6300 from last year, itself a small upgrade over the 6100+ from 2023. But this chip’s roots go back even further.
The Dimensity 6400 is fabbed on a 6nm TSMC process and features an octa-core CPU: 2x Cortex-A76 at 2.5GHz and 6x A55 at 2.0GHz. In addition, there is an ARM Mali-G57 MC2 GPU.
The chipset is designed for LPDDR4X RAM (up to 2,133MHz) and UFS 2.2 storage. It supports displays with up to 1080p+ resolution at up to 120Hz refresh rate and 10-bit colors. The ISP supports cameras up to 108MP (there’s no word on video resolution). The 5G Release 16 modem has a peak downlink speed of 3.3Gbps and also supports Wi-Fi 5 (ac) and Bluetooth 5.2.

In short, this is the Dimensity 6300, but with a 0.1GHz overclock on the A76 cores and possibly on the GPU, but MediaTek didn’t go into such specifics. As we hinted above, this is a fairly old design – the 2x A76 + 6x A55 and Mali-G57 MC2 combo can be found on the Dimensity 810 from 2021. That was also a 6nm chip, though it is less capable than the 6400 – it can only handle 64MP cameras, its 5G modem topped out at 2.77Gbps and it had older Bluetooth 5.1. Still, it’s very similar hardware from four years ago.
While it’s an old soul, the Dimensity 6400 will power fresh new designs – the Realme P3x 5G, for example, which will be unveiled tomorrow.

Finally, I would not call Lunar Lake a "Success" TBH. It is designed for "AI! AI! AI! AI! AI!" Efficiency, most definitely. But for "AI! AI! AI!", no. They hallucinate. Thus making the NPU unproductive. Wh...

Still does not justify the naming scheme. Just as mentioned earlier I got confused between Lunar Lake and Arrow Lake. Both are 200 series. One is for "AI! AI! AI! AI! AI!" (Lunar Lake or V). The other is regular (Arrow Lake or U ...

Ah ok, now I see what you mean. And this is why I really hate Intel's new naming scheme. I hate it with a passion. Even as an IT professional me-self, I got confused. Especially this 200 series. Even LTT and Gamer Nexus is not ha...
