Samsung Pay finally works on the Gear S2, in beta for now

Vlad, 18 July, 2016

Ever since it unveiled the Gear S2 last year, Samsung said its payments service would eventually work on the smartwatch. But the compatibility didn't arrive in 2015. Instead, it's only today that a Samsung Pay Beta option has become available for the Gear S2 through the Gear Manager app.

Better late than never? Maybe. Anyway, there's one important (and huge) caveat to take into account here, aside from the fact that this is still a beta implementation and thus bugs could be everywhere. What you need to know is that you'll only be able to make payments with your Gear S2 through NFC. The watch doesn't support the nifty MST technology, so it works with NFC-enabled payment terminals only.

If you're interested in taking this for a spin you need to have the non-3G version of the Gear S2 and live in the US (these are the current limitations of the beta). Head into the Gear Manager app on your Samsung phone and tap on the Samsung Pay Beta option in the list. But only do that if you're on the latest Gear S2 firmware. You'll be guided through a few steps, including installing an additional app, after which you'll have to setup a secure password on your Gear S2 and re-add your cards (yes, it doesn't just pull them from your phone's Samsung Pay app for whatever reason).

After the setup is complete, using Samsung Pay on your Gear S2 is a simple matter - just long-press the physical Back button on the watch. Your default card will load, but if you have more you can jump between them with the scroll wheel.

Screw Samsung for excluding their 3G/4G users. Shameful. 잡스러운.

Why do you think they roll out new features this way? It's the only way that works. Start small, advance and grow.
