Huawei remains unimpressed with softened ban

The US president Donald Trump reverted his decision to block US companies to trade with Huawei during the weekend, following the G-20 meeting in Osaka, Japan. Yet, the smartphone maker’s founder Ren Zhengfei told The Financial Times that the softer ban will not have “much impact” on the company’s business.

Ren said Huawei is adjusting to a new era of American hostility and would continue to “focus on doing our own job right”.

Huawei remains unimpressed with softened ban

The remarks followed an interview with the media, in which Mr. Ren reinstated the doctrine of self-reliance and self-sufficiency. He was quoted that the US is helping the company by putting it in hard conditions so the team can become more united than ever.

The executive is pretty sure the company can keep doing its job even without US components which would be switched with domestic products.

Some companies like Micron and Intel found a way to sell their components to Huawei through a legal loophole even before the easing of the restriction so little will change for them.

There’s also the possibility the US President will reinstate the restrictions at some point as he's shown to be quite unpredictable, so clearly all involved parties have decided to prepare for the worst case scenario.
