Motorola is working on a 5G version of the foldable Razr 2019

Peter, 24 January 2020

The Motorola Razr 2019 is powered by an uninspiring Snapdragon 710 chipset, which among other things means no 5G connectivity. However, a subsidiary of Motorola Mobility is set to unveil a 5G version of the phone.

It will be shown off at the Wuhan International Expo Center in the city of Wuhan. That’s no coincidence as the phone will be manufactured there as well, at the Lenovo’s factory in the city.

It’s not clear if the 5G-connected Motorola Razr will be sold globally, for now it sounds like a “no”. EE is already taking pre-orders for the UK, Verizon will sell the phone in the US starting on February 6. Both use 4G modems, despite the 5G push from the respective carriers.

Anyway, this upgraded connectivity will come with a new chipset – a Snapdragon 765G or a MediaTek Dimensity are the likely picks as those are the brands Motorola has most experience with (though some recent models use Samsung chips, so don’t discount the Exynos 980 and 990).

Slightly unfortunate choice of location in the present circumstances :-(

And how when the chipset does not support 5g? Maybe new better chip? Would be niceeee.
