ZTE nubia Red Magic 6R in for review

Two months after we reviewed the nubia Red Magic 6 gaming flagship, its more mainstream sibling, the Red Magic 6R arrives in our office. Thanks to the retail box, we know the R stands for Racing while the phone significantly scaled back on the gaming aesthetics and adds a few upgrades targeted at the larger masses - a better selfie camera, depth sensor for portrait shots, and a much lighter and more compact body.

The nubia Red Magic 6R is about 10% cheaper than the Red Magic 6, and before we set off to find if its a better deal let's do a quick unboxing and share some early impressions.

Taking the phone out of the box, we realized all four sides are flat, with some curvature only at the corners. This allows the phone to stay upright on its own, although we doubt many will ever need it to.

The 1080p display is big enough, and nubia made no effort to hide the single punch hole on top - it comes with a silver ring around it, so you always knows where to look. The screen refresh rate goes up to 144Hz.

The user interface is Red Magic OS 4.0 and has a bunch of gaming-oriented modifications. Our 12GB RAM unit holds great in some quick tests like a quick battle or short race, but there’s a whole review to be done before we say how the Game Space control center performs when tasked with prolonged gaming.

nubia is going on sale globally on June 24. Its Chinese version offered 55W charging for its 4,200mAh battery, but the global units support only 30W top ups. Finding out if that makes any difference is one of the things we'll do as we work on the review. Stay tuned!
