iOS 16.0.1 rolls out ahead of iPhone 14 launch to fix setup and migration for the new phones

Apple released iOS 16 this Monday and it saw slightly faster adoption than iOS 15 over the first three days. While that’s a nice update for owners of older iPhones, those buying an iPhone 14 model are getting the new OS out of the box. But there is a problem.

The iPhone 14 series was flashed with a slightly older build of iOS 16 at the factory and Apple has discovered three issues with it. The first one is quite important as it may cause trouble while you’re activating your new phone and migrating from the old one.

Don’t worry, though, there iOS version 16.0.1 is already out and the phone should prompt you to install any system updates at the start of the initial setup. You should update before proceeding.

The new minor version also fixes two other issues. One affected the iPhone 14 Pro Max and caused zoomed in photos (in landscape orientation) to be soft. Another caused enterprise single sign-on apps to fail to authenticate.

By the way, a bigger update, iOS 16.1, is already in beta. It adds the battery percentage icon to some older iPhones, lets you delete the Apple Wallet app and introduces “Clean Energy Charging”. Basically, your iPhone will check the status of your local power grid and it will prefer to charge when low carbon emission generators are online. This system also tracks your daily routine, so it will make sure that your phone is charged when you need it.

The iPhone 14, 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max will be available tomorrow, so if you have pre-ordered one (or plan on picking one up from the store), remember to install the v16.0.1 update. The iPhone 14 Plus is coming on October 7.
