Tecno details the Ultimage tech that powers Camon 20 Premiere's 50MP RBGW camera

Tecno introduced thew new Camon 20 series earlier this month and the top model of the series has a unique camera setup. It uses a collection of imaging technologies that the company has dubbed “Ultimage”, which is a combination of image sensor and AI features.

The Tecno Camon 20 Premiere is the showcase for what Ultimage can do. It features an RGBW camera sensors, something that the company has been working on for a couple of years now. Having a White subpixel instead of a second Green one increases the light transmittance.

On top of that, the company used a glass element in the lens array (1G+6P), which also helps. And finally, there’s no substitution for sensor size – the Premiere went from a 1/1.73” to a 1/1.56” sensor, or to put it in terms of pixel size from 0.8µm to 1.0µm. Remember that surface area scales quadratically, so the new pixels have 56.25% more light gathering area.

The Premiere also employs sensor-shift image stabilization instead of the optical kind used in previous models. The sensor moves 5,000 times a second to correct for handshake and other unwanted movement, making for a crisper image in the dark.

The raw output of the camera is fed to the “Portrait Master Algorithm”, which has been trained on 50 million photos of people with various skin colors. This enables users to take what Tecno is calling the “one shot perfect photo”.

In case you missed the announcement, the Tecno Camon 20 Premiere has a very curios camera setup. The main camera module is a 50MP RGBW sensor as we mentioned already. The ultra wide module uses a 108MP sensor behind its 115° lens, the highest resolution UW camera we have seen to date.

At the end of Tecno’s camera-focused announcement came another important reveal – the company will be among the first brands to release an Android 14 update, which will arrive on the Camon 20 series first (the phones come with Android 13).

I expected a few more comments. Not many but a few. The hardware and claims sound promising. I would like to see how this compares to the latest from Samsung, Xiaomi, Sony, and iPhone. It does seem to at least have potential. Interested how raw mi...
