Android 14 October 4 release confirmed by carrier

Vlad, 03 October 2023

Last we heard anything about Google's delayed release of Android 14, it was rumored to finally be dropping on the day of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro announcement - October 4. Back then, it was just a rumor. Today, it's sort of confirmed.

Only sort of, because this isn't exactly an official announcement - and we're not expecting one from Google until the day of. What we have is Canadian carrier Telus listing when software update rollouts would commence for the devices it sells. And under all Pixel devices starting with the Pixel 4a, "Android U" was listed as going out on October 4.

Android U is short for Android Upside Down Cake, which is the internal codename for Android 14. And we say all of the aforementioned Pixel listings were said to get this update on October 4, because they don't say that anymore.

Chances are, someone at Google found this being reported on in various online spaces and asked Telus to remove the information, which the carrier promptly did. Of course, that's just our speculation on the matter, we can't be entirely sure what went on, so there's still a chance, however slim, that the information itself was wrong.

The good news is we'll find out in less than 48 hours. If Android 14 does go out on October 4, then we're sure Google will make a point out of announcing that on stage at its event, so stay tuned for that and we'll let you know what happens.

I would say Material you was a big visual update on Android 12, yes we don't see this change in every Android release, but at least it's still happening

Just installed the update. Gone are the days when you could see noticeable changes in the UI/OS with new versions, it's all about QoL changes now. Nothing helpful/interesting update for me this time. Not complaining, just an observation.
