An excellent basic phone :) I acquired mine in Taiwan to replace the CDMA unit I lost home in NZ... now am trying to find a CDMA version of the 1600 to replace my crap LG unit. May just ditch CDMA and switch networks! I don't need a camera or an MP3 player - just a properly-engineered phone: Which this is... LOVE it. Yes the ring volume could be louder; but it's still an excellent unit. :)

Bart, i use this phone and you have a point about the loudness of the ringtones. Outdoors i use the nokia tune at max volume for my ringtone with vibration activated. For incoming messages i use the 'SPECIAL' message alert tone at max volume with vibration. Try this and see if it helps. The Nokia 1600 is a great basic phone. Lovely comfortable keypad; i just wish the buttons were spaced apart for my big fingers!

When u have problems with the names showing in sms and callings, you should go to your phonebook and add the country code to the phone numbers, then the problem will be solved.
I love this phone, but the ringtones ar not loud enough

I bought two of this unit back to june 2007. After longing for the phone in some time, & read almost all reviews about this phone everywhere. I fell in love with the design & simplicty.
Now I'm writing this review from my Nokia E61 using the WiFi feature. It's a free internet.
Okay back to the story, when I bought them, one for my gf & one for myself. & then the plan changed, she gave her 1600 to me. So i got two of them myself that time around.
So, I gave one of mine to my dearest Dad then. And after some times of happily usage, i sold mine. My daddy still use his 1600 until now (March 2008).
Lately I'm badly needed a secondary phone for backup & additional one.. & from other brands and other hundreds of type of mobiles out there, this phone once again comes out to my mind like it was did before..
I really miss this phone, I want to go back to the good old days with my 1600.
Yes,it is true. I miss this phone so much.
I am planning to get this phone ONCE again, hope the new ones still available at market now.
Only Nokia could make me like this. They give soul to each parts components of their phones.
Well, maybe not all type.. =) but this one surely takes my breath away.
I will go back here later to this opinion area ..IF.. I really buy this unit AGAIN.
After two years the phone still makes me considered it heavily.
Design is classically simple.
& simple is perfect.

I can't find an option in make the audio louder. Incoming phone calls are hard for me to hear but I can't seem to find a way to increase the incoming voice level. Any answers?

"This is a great basic phone which i currently use. The keypad is very comfortable and is one of the best i have ever came across; i only wish it was a bit wider. The ringtones are loud and when i am outdoors i have phone on max volume with vibrate and i never miss calls or texts. The most important features of a phone for me are A COMFORTABLE KEYPAD and LOUD RINGTONES and this phone does the job! The ringtones ascend on this phone but i have not found it to be a problem. If you are want a no frills basic phone then the NOKIA 1600 is for you. Avoid the nokia 1200,1208,1650 phones as their keypads are terrible and the ringtones are not loud enough."Good Point! This is also my opinion, one very good basic mobilphone!

there have been a number of software updates to correct the phonebook name problems.
Check the phone software by keying *#0000# (needs a SIM in) If version is less than 07.02 then you may get these problems. A nokia service centre can give you a free update if phone is in its warranty period.

Dont know why your SMS's you are receiving are not showing the senders name at the top of the screen. If the persons name is in your phone contacts list then it should show their name when you receive a message from them. I have no probs with my NOKIA 1600.....

This is a good basic phone for someone who just wants a mobile at a cheap price without all the gizmosos. Easy to use and its loud speaker is a boom in noisey enviroments. And most people buy a phone primarly anyway to make calls and texts. On the negative side it doesn't look good. The glassy looking keyset is bad. On looks the similar basic 1112 at the same price beats it by a mile.

This a phone for the person that is not too carefull with phones. Have mine going on two years now and it's been a rough time for this phone. Mine has the scratches and dents to show that it has fallen, been flung and tossed countless number of times. This on the plus has not affected its funtionality one bit. Even though i own series 40 and 60 Nokias which i love dearly, i dear not put them through the thinng that my 1600 went through. Although mine never got into a bucket of water i hear that blowdrer is ll it takes and you're good to go.
