Is it possible to set a plain background on the menu screens instead of the coloured stripes? I find it distracting. I have switched off wallpaper but there seems to be no setting for this.

OK, thanks Gadgeteer. I'm sure I'll get used to it. It's just that my old 5210 had a much better keypad than this ones (apart from the backlight, which was much worse). And I don't like the top two selection keys which are difficult to locate quickly and press. I always catch the four-way scroll key accidentally.

To unknown, I bought it because I haven't been impressed by Moto's, and wanted a replacement for my old 5210, which was an excellent phone despite what you will most likely say. Apart from the keypad, the 5140 is better.

To peter: I wouldn't know about everyone else, but the lowest keys on my unit certainly aren't difficult to press. A bit stiffer than the other keys, yes, but not that stiff. Have you tried using the tip of your fingernails to press them, since they can be too small for just the fingertips?

thats a good point gadgeteer.well,my me45 impressed me with its durability back then.and you sure are right, the software of siemens is flimpsy, but it is usually corrected after a couple of months through siemens careline.but it is good to have different opinions.no phone is perfect,no brand is perfect, you vote for nokia,i vote for siemens.

Well, CHIEF MEDIC, that's all well and good. But my opinion (and experience) dictates that Nokia is still the superior brand. I was eyeing the Siemens ME45 two years ago, but then a co-worker of mine had difficulties with his SL45. He had one hell of a headache having it repaired because the parts were so expensive and hard to find (the unit wasn't even physically abused in any way. Can you say "flimsy"?). in the end he figured it was cheaper to get a new phone instead and so he got himself a Nokia.

Besides, how your girlfriend's Nokia 5140 got damaged while speeding (with both inertia and gravity working on the unit) is very different from a Siemens ME45 taking a mere vertical freefall from a helicopter (where gravity is the only factor). Try to reenact that 180km/h incident with a Siemens phone and you'll more or less get the same result. The use of all mobile phones, regardless of brand, entail a certain degree of care and common sense. Even a Nokia 6250, given a sufficient enough force, will still get damaged. While I am impressed by Nokia's claim that my 5140 is shock-resistant, I still heed the instruction on my user manual that says "rough handling can break internal circuit boards and fine mechanics". Just because a handset is advertised with a certain degree of durability doesn't automatically mean that we have the license to abuse and neglect it. Care should still be taken in its use.

Well I do understand that your girlfriend's phone failed to give her her money's worth in terms of performance, but understand also that not everyone will necessarily have the same negative experience with their handsets. It's just a matter of opinion really. Nokia works for me, Siemens works for you.

i am sure none of you has tried the phone under real severe conditions as me.i was speedind over 180km/h in my car to go and help stop a crisis.this phone slipped of my girlfriends hand and bounced many times on the roadway.result:the cover in front of the screen broken.the screen itself is almost destroyed and generally the phone has a poor function.siemens phones offer greater durability.two years ago i was on a chopper.when it was taking off,at a height of about 10m(30ft) my siemens me45 fell of my pocket.my assistant got it and when i got back on the helipad he gave it to me.the phone was a 100% functional.so,stop praising nokia and see the truth.comraring this phone to siemens m65 is like comparing the toyota yaris of my girlfriend with my audi a8.

Got this phone in the Philippines for $322USD, and I must say the thing is worth every cent, at least for me. I'm a rather fast learner when it comes to gadgets, but this thing's got more features than Inspector Gadget, certainly more than enough to keep me busy fiddling with it (it's been almost a week and I still keep discovering a cool function or two!).

Unknown: the phone lights up superbly in the dark, the characters are easy to read with more or less an even backlight illumination. I've been able to use the flashlight feature inside the moviehouse. Everyone, be advised that the phone shown on this website's gallery is only a prototype, which explains why the rubber keymat is somewhat translucent and therefore has an uneven illumination. My 5140 is exactly the same color as the phone shown here, but since it's already the production version, the keymat is opaque which forces more light to shine through the characters, making them even more visible in the dark.

AVOID directprepayphones.co.uk. If you don't sign over all your bank details for 'free 6 months insurance' they charge you £100 more!!! There is something fishy there. Too cheap to be true @ £139.

Nicola...do you know the difference between water proof & water resistant?
The phone is water proof!...splash resistant! do no submerge the whole phone in water...I guess it pays to read the instructions
Tell nokia about what happened...they will laugh...tell you bad luck...your fault and think what you did was really stupid...like I do
Bam your right the GPS should come inbuilt without extra costs....but hey you picked the phone up for only $290 so an extra $150 still makes it cheaper than retail pal!
Goodluck if something goes wrong with the phone....at the price you reackon u paid I would be suprised if they honour the warranty
NO CENSORSHIP...thanks for the info :)
Jay...what feature does your lady like best? The torch(handy for dark spots), the moisture proof qualities (never know where the phone could end up) or the call vibration?
PS...you meant she loves the phone right?

                                      1. The 5140 has a 4k color screen. That's it. It's not 65k colors.

                                      2. It should go for no more than $350 USD because of it's outdated technology, although I'm sure Nokia will try to hype it.

                                      3. The CC70-D GPS shell will be approx $150 USD. However, you can't use the phone and the GPS at the same time. It's one or the other as it completely replaces the top half of the phone, making the handset otherwise useless.

                                      4. This phone does not exist yet outside of certain areas. It's release date has been continually pushed back, due to working the GPS shell in seamlessly (it was originally supposed to be part of the phone, but they decided at the last minute to make it an add-on, hence why it has a seperate shell).

                                      5. This phone would have been a hot item a year ago. It's nothing but a 5100 with a compass. If anyone pays more than $250 for it in this day and age when there's things like Samsungs and Motorolas with 65k screens and better camera quality, then you are a ... and deserve beatings.
