The North American version of this phone updates to firmware 5.91, 5.81 is for the rest of the world.

Firmware can be updated via the Nokia site, you know... s... moreI agree with you pal. the problem is that the American version is diferent to the European version (different rm- and frequences). Sometimes the firmwares aren't available in all countries, for that reason I was asking, because if the American vesion of 5310 hasn't the update to v5.81 I wouldn't recommend it to my friend.
I hope someone with the American version of the 5310 could reply my question.

I got a new 5310 nice phone for the price, i have a problem that someone might be able to help me with.When i try to addjust the earpiece volume it will not let me what happens is its comes up saying to push to talk contacts...can anyone tell me how to fix this??

Firmware can be updated via the Nokia site, you know... so it doesn't matter which version you get, you can always update it. Unless it's a branded phone - those take ages before they get an update, sometimes never get it.
so, buy an unlocked, simfree, UNBRANDED phone and you'll be ok.
i miss my 5310.

Just bought the blue 5310 from Rogers in Canada for $260 CAN and I loooove it!
I've never owned a nokia cell phone and I absolutely love the interface and the 16 million colour screen really makes a difference, it has a beautiful screen.
Overall feel is very nice and it does not feel cheap at all, even though you think it might because it is so thin and small.
Sound quality is amaaazing! The speaker is very good, but when you put the headphones in the sound is outstanding, equal if not better than an ipod, the headsets that come in the box have incredible bass.
Camera is decent, but it's not made to be a camera phone, this is a music phone, so it is great for that, ok for a camera, very understandable.
Overall I absolutely love it, design is great and I'm starting to like Nokia more and more now, awesome phone.

5310's music is v gud.no doubt.bt 1ly in headphn.
SE is gud in both.
Ipod nano is no match for 5310.
Hav u tried 6233,w550i?
Both has awesum sound in loudspkr.
N91? Most of the mobile xperts say the 1ly music phn nokia has evr made.
3250?1 of the best loudspkr nokia has producd.
& 5300? It is much more loudr thn 5310.
So dn thnk 5310 is smtng.it is nutng.ther are much mor phns 2 rule the land.
