Starting with Nougat, there will be two partitions(2 versions of android, double the storage used), where a partition which is not live(not currently used) is upgraded and then when you reboot, the upgraded partition will become live and the previous live partition will be used for the next upgrade.(I think I am not confusing ;-) )
But the above is enabled only on phones shipping with Nougat and not the ones upgrading from older versions(like 6->7). So, in either case you will have same storage used as when the phone shipped.

Because in India only SD 625 version is selling for Rs 12999 which is overpriced. I dont want to pay that much for a inferior chipset. I would buy Redmi Note 4 immediately if this SD650 version is available.

Q: When upgrading a phone with new version of Android 7 --> 8 or 6 --> 7 does it swap OS files or OS takes twice memory? Is it the same as out of box new version of android or phone becomes heavier and slower?

This is cheap marketing which is going to be eradicated.
I personally wanna see what happens to Nokia's battery life after months of rigorous usage, but since HMD people are ex-Nokiaans i am pretty sure we are getting the same quality.
yes redmi note 4's battery endurance is more, but their phones deplete battery life very fast.
I have 3 redmi phones in my home. A 5 month old redmi note 3, in the beginning it worked more than a full day on normal usage, but now it have to be charged twice to sustain a day.
A 3 month redmi 3s which started lagging on heavy net usage(started heating too) battery life is good till now, but significant drop is noticed.
A 2 year old redmi 1s, it seems the only durable phone xiaomi made, but since it's camera is protruding outside, it's camera glass is completely damaged, i can't use it's back camera anymore, and it badly overheats & sometimes due to overheating battery starts draining without doing anything(miui bug) and whole battery drops within hours.It's battery life is hell, can't sustain 5 hours with wifi on. Not to mention it still works after countless drops(only durable phone xiaomi made).
My parents can stay on Xiaomi till it works, but i am done with redmi.
I am going for a proper phone now & HMD/Nokia have made it.
those who are buying Nokia are buying it coz they know it will last long, it is trustable.
BTW your line is a bit contradictory that "Redmi note4 beats Nokia6 in performance"
If nokia 6 runs smooth as hell & never lags then how note4 beats it in performance. Only thing is redmi note4 will play games better than this phone.
