Default headphones
The default headphones provided are not suitable for music. I didn't even try them. Wait a sec I ll give them a shot. Yeah they're pretty crap. They're like the headphones you'd get with old Nokia java phones. You'll need 3rd party headphones. The Xiaomi in ear 2017 series earphones are good. They are around 10-30$.
Audio output with good earphones
If you're desperately looking for phones with good audio at this price point, listening to music via the Nokia 6 will bring a tear of happiness to your eyes. It's soo beautiful. The bass, the mids, the highs, the soundstage, the sound profile, the volume - everything is presented really well imo. The bass is adequate,but doesn't overwhelm and the soundstage isn't as narrow as a cramped up bathroom.
Gsmarena does publish audio tests for various devices but they are not a 100% representation of the practical experience. Gsmarena gave high scores to j7 pro for its audio, but when I tried it hands on, it sounded awful. Wayy too much bass and everything muddled up. No thank you. Same goes for the galaxy s5, gsmarena gave it excellent scores, but in reality it sounds like a tin can (the SD 801 Version).
The Nokia 6 has really good audio output Imo. Of course it's not 100% flawless, but it is one of the if not the best sounding device I've tested. It's also more than loud enough for me.
If you use large headphones,take it to the store and try it on the phone before buying. But for regular ear/headphones, it should have enough power to drive them.
It has two dolby enhancement options.
1. Music mode - on headphones,it improves isolation,soundstage and clarity.
2. Theater mode - it improves the directional audio by a big margin. If you like binaural asmr stuff, you'll be surprised at what it can do.
I usually have them turned off, because tinkering around is annoying.
Microphone issue
While video/audio recording, this phone has strong noise cancellation at work, which makes far away noises choppy. But closeup audio like nearby voices are clear. But imo there should be an option for us toggle this feature, because I don't like noise cancellation.
Headphone hardware is really good. It captures clear audio with adequate bass, but the noise cancellation makes the sound choppy in loud environments. This is the only flaw with this device. It can be fixed with a software update.

In my experience with a Samson SR850 headphone, the quality is really great. Good frequency response, though you may need to use custom equalizer(no inbuilt) to match your taste.
Dolby setting is not useful in headphones. It just enhances the bass & treble but sounds somewhat congested and artificial. It also reduces the volume little bit.
Regarding volume, the max setting is just enough loud for some streaming songs and youtube videos. I had a feeling like a 2-3 points higher may be good for loud listening. But some songs that I have locally was loud. If you listen at moderate volume then its enough.
Also, if you are using a IEM type earphone, then the volume would be loud.
For music listening, most of the recent midrange phones have good audio output. You can refer the GSMArena review to compare between flagship phones too.

Due to its unimpressive display and audio I didn't look much into its front cam. But it was pretty average with smudging and such. The one on the Nokia 6 isn't far better either indoors, but it is definitely better. In bright light it takes sharp selfies with natural colors and good contrast. White balance is fine too. It's an 8mp 'Autofocus' camera, oddly.
I took some landscape photos with the front camera and people thought it was taken with the back camera and complemented that the photos looked good.
The front camera on the Nokia 6 is 'probably' better than the one on j7 pro, but I haven't done extensive hands on comparison. The Nokia 6 definitely has an impressive front cam imo.

Considering a better display, better audio (no blank hissing as in the a1), far better build with gorilla glass, NFC (android pay) and better overall durability and expected longevity, I'd recommend investing in the Nokia 6, only unless you're a gamer.
BTW I'm not here to argue, just putting my perspective up.
