Great phone if you're looking for something basic, reliable and easy to use. As for problems, screen blanking out switching off etc....... it's usually caused by faulty chargers. (happened to me in the past) when you take back the phone also replace the charger, and you'll find you'll have no more probs.

Whining on non functional Nokia hardware?

What did you expect?!? Everybody knows that Nokia has the best software but crappy hardware. If you prefer the best hardware and crappy software try Motorola....
Or you could go for a compromise: Samsung mediocre hardware and software...
Nokia got ONE big hardware advantage though, the transflective coulour screen that actually works even in direct sunshine!!
My recomandation is buy a Nokia, and keep your old phone as a spare for use every time the new one is in for repairs...
(Got a V3 for 8 months, love the hardware but the lossy software is driving me nuts, switching back to Nokia

Hi !! i wrote you comment on about the transfer on your NOKIA 6170 ..look , i had the same problem and i fixed it buying a DKU-2 cable i had a DKU-5 and MA 8630 , those cables can transfer images , data , phone book but not mp3 ...the DKU 2 can do all !
and if you can`t do it with cable , try USB INFRARED !!!

To asian: Because I really like the phone! This third one seems to have settled down (only turned itself off once), so looking good. If it plays up, I'll try a fourth (free on my contract) before I reluctantly switch to another phone.

Mary Ann is talking about the 6170, specifically about how she's got an officially duff one. Why is a defective motherboard not covered by the warranty, Mary Ann? I'm on my third 6170, and true to form it's switching itself off just like the previous two. There's obviously a problem here.

                            To Mary Ann:
This place is for talking about the nokia 6170 NOT nokia's services. You're saying the phone sucks because yu got unlucky with it being deffective? what the hell? boo! hoo! cry somehwere else!

Like Mary Ann, I'm having trouble with mine switching itself off. I've had two like this, third arriving tomorrow, so maybe third time lucky. Pity, because it's really neat, if a tad heavy. Battery life could be better as well, as some previous posters have said.

The Nokia 6170 sucks. I bought this phone on April 19 2005 for about US$300. 2 weeks into normal use, the phone blanks out/powers out for no apparent reason, from that time on until today, June 13, 2005, I have been going to and fro the Nokia service center for Nokia to address this apparently defective "brand new" product. The Nokia service center here tested the unit, uploaded a "new program, tested the original battery, and their own findings indicate that the product sold to me is untampered and defective from the start. Nokia noted that the apparent flaw stems from the motherboard of my brand new unit, and they said this is not covered by warranty and they would replace it and it would cost me $100!!!!!! I hae had high esteem for the quality of the Nokia products, until this expensive and inutile/defective phone costing me $300!!! Now I have such low regard for their product, their warranty and their service level. Thank you all for reading my humble post.

Does this phone have picture caller ID shown on the external mini display? How is the reception and battery life as compared to Motorola Razr?
Planning to buy an unlocked phone, what do most people recommend, Razr or this one? I have a Samsung and the reception is just so poor when compared to a Motorola (used a friend's Motorola, also with TMobile, and there was no drop calls dialed at the same location as compared to a Samsung). Help!
