US $380 in Singapore? That's pretty good. It falls in the range of the 317 to 420 Euros that Jaypee said. But who payed 490 for it? Isn't that pricey?
Does anybody know anything about this phone coming out in India or Dubai over the next two to three weeks? What shops will have it in stock for a $380-USD competitive price? I got a friend there who's going to buy it for me and bring it back to the states.

Jaypee, what Hanzo said is right (Thank you hanzo). If you work with CDMA and TDMA (in our pre-gsm days), then you couldn't do that. Cell phone went with provider, and you coudln't take your sprint phone to a verizon provider (still can't). But now, with GSM around, if we have a unlocked phone, it will work just fine - as long as it operates on our band. Which sucks because I can never own the nokia 8910i - (it doens't have a north america band) which is the phone I've always wanted.
So that being said, the 6170 coming out in Europe, Asia, Africa... wherever, as logn as it has our band, I should just buy it. Right? Or is there something I'm missing.

I see and I try this phone in Portugal. Is the same series 40'. The display is a litle bit large, but the rest is the same. The memory is very bad. Have 1,2 mb for user and 1,2 mb ocuped.

Jaypee, make sure you get a unlocked phone then all SIM provided by which ever company will work for that phone. Keep in mind though, you have to make sure your service provider(operator) offers the bands that ur phone supports, if you are in North America, its' 850/1900 else where it's 900/1800

I've always thought that in America you have a whole different system with operators than we do..? According to an American I know, you choose your phone by operators, for example, if the 6170 is connected by a certain operator, it can't be used by other operators, correct? Therefor you haveto switch phones if you wish to switch operators, am I wrong? Here we just buy a phone and then choose an operator, which provides us the connection through a SIM-card. And we can switch operators by getting a new SIM-card without having to switch phones... I might have the wrong idea, correct me if I'm wrong, cause I'm curious about this. That's why I thought it's impossible to use European phones in America, unless you're using it through a foreign operator, which would cost like s**t!

Jaypee, That's the thing. I don't know when America is going to release this phone(or the 6260 for that matter - you can't get them here from any provider). I want to get the European or Asian one because it should work in America just fine as long as it operates on our GSM band (1900 I think) - you might know better. I'm pretty sure my 8890 wasn't an American phone because all the spelling was different ("dialled" instead of "dialed", etc.).
A friend of mine is in Dubai right now and he's the one who will be bringing me back the 6170 (or the 6260 if it can't be found). He talkd to the Nokia distributor for the whole UAE and Dubai and the distributor told him the phone will be out in 2 weeks. He also told me that Nokia is releasing an American version of this phone too according to the distributor, but I dont think that's coming out in two weeks. So that being said, why not just get the Europe or Asian one? if it's going to work in america just fine.

EDGE will make it faster to go online THAN GPRS would. The connection is still slow.. but if you want to go online with a cell, EDGE is the fastest way so far. The online shops I know operate in Finland only. besides, the American Nokia website still has the "planned 4th quarter 2004" so they haven't even released it yet.

I'm from The Netherlands and the store-price is 470 euro's. I ordered it today :D It will be out next week over here so i'm gonna have loads of fun with it!!!

Thanks for the larger keypad heads up Jaypee. I think I've made up my mind on getting the Nokia 6170. I think I like the whole EDGE thing. I can see myself trying to hook up my laptop or my PDA (HP iPAQ h4355 Pocket PC) to this using the data connection to get online (the EDGE would make this fast, right?). Now, the big question, how can I get this in the US? I've tried yahooing "buy Nokia 6170" but nothing is coming up. Anybody know anybody who's selling it online and not in stores around the world?

6170 has larger keypad so I'd recommend that one for messaging. On the other hand, 6260 has a larger internal display....

Okay, latest info on the 6170:
All the information below concider Finland, for othe countries, I don't know the exact info.
- The phone is out now!! (released on December 2nd)
- The price for this phone varies from 420 to 317 euros (the highest is the official price which Nokia recommends and the lowest is found in an online shop)
- And as you can see, the data speed announced on this site has changed (by my request) because the phone supports HSCD and EDGE
