To 786:
The 6230 *DOESN'T* play direct MPEG-4 files. However, it WILL play 3GP files encoded with the MPEG-4 codec. To break it down for you: some software tools used to create 3GP files will allow you to either use a codec called H.263, another codec called MPEG-4 and in some cases, a codec called X-VID. The 6230 ONLY supports H.263 and MPEG-4. If you should encode a video file using the X-VID codec it WON'T work when you try to open the file on the phone.
The H.263 codec is the best overall codec based on my findings because when you encode video files at a high bitrate, especially large video files, in using MPEG-4 the video sometimes stagger a bit and show little square boxes when the camera change from a scene. With the H.263 codec the video normally runs smoothly even if it was encoded at a high bitrate.
Some programs allow you to manually enter a bitrate while others only allow you to use pre-selected bitrates. Bitrates can start from 1kbps to about 512kbps. If you are serious about video quality DON'T select anything below 128kbps and try not to go as far as 512kbps. 512kbps is a very high bitrate and the video, regardless of which codec you use, will drag every now and again during playback...in addition to that, too high a bitrate drains your battery more quickly and stresses the phone processor. For the record, I use 128kps for good quality and adequate battery life and 216kbps for high quality while compromising the battery life a bit. The choice is yours BUT follow my guidelines.
This whole video thing can be confusing though because 3GP files should have a .3gp file extension BUT there are some cases where you will find files labelled as MPEG-4 which works with the phone. These files have a .mp4 file extension. The ONLY reason why these files work is because they have a trace of 3GP encoding in them, that's the only conclusion I can think of. I have received .mp4 files from other phones which worked easily on my phone. However, these .mp4 files that work with the Nokia 6230, if you should check the details of the file using your phone options, you will see the text in the details saying that the format of the file is 3GP.
My advice, if you come across a MPEG-4 file and really want it, send it to your phone and cross your fingers because it will either work or don't work. It all depends on how the file was encoded and we CAN'T tell just by looking at the file. It's simply a trial and error procedure. There's nothing more I can say in regards to this topic. I have said all I could possibly say. Keep me posted. Take care 786.

To PREM:
I have used version 5.35 a few times on a friend's 6230. I saw no problems. In fact, you may mistake it for 5.24 based on the speed and trouble free operations. In comparison to 5.50, 5.35 still beats it in terms of overall phone speed, that may be the only thing it beats 5.50 at. Regardless, I still think 5.24 has an advantage over the other firmwares so I personally stick to 5.24. Hope my answer was helpful PREM. Take care.

To Sudin:
Based on my personal experience reverting back to 5.24 from 5.50 WON'T damage your phone. I'm not saying it's impossible but it's hard for software to damage hardware. Sudin, if you currently have 5.50 and want to try 5.24 go ahead and don't worry about a thing.
In regards to the earphone question, I checked Nokia's site to see the latest earphones which are compatible with Nokia 6230 and I picked this one: "Nokia Boom Headset HDB-4" and this is what Nokia have to say about it: This modern headset comes with basic handsfree functionality and a convenient over-the-ear concept providing excellent audio quality. I would give it a try because it not only provides stereo but apparently good bass as well. Take care until we speak again.

To 6230 FANS: Guess what, I had 5.50 on my phone and then went back to 5.24 and my phone is working just like new. I did all this last year summer. I'm NOT saying what the technician told you isn't true but it certainly hasn't affect my phone.
I'm glad I could help you solve the Caller Group problem. Ask for my assistance anytime.

To NAGLIA:
Thanks for the special greeting (smile).
Well, the 6230 is hard to top by any means. Think about it. It's almost 3 years since the 6230 was released (April 2004). It dominated the market easily. It's just today that other brands are catching up. It has everything and some features many people don't use, don't need or will never need BUT I always say, it's best to have more features than less.
Every other phone including the '6230i' can only expand on the features that the 6230 has...they CAN'T add anything more significant than what 6230 has. In this world there are 2 types of audio and visual devices, Camera and video camera, Radio and Music Player. The 6230 has it all so other phones can only expand on these features by incorporating higher specs. into their audio and visual areas.
The 6230i has the same features as the original but expands on some. Both phones have the same amount of colours (65,536)
Difference between phones:

As you can all see, some of the features have been revved up but there are still some drawbacks. The phone weighs 2 grams more, options for replying to a message are gone, eg. Reply to sender saying "Yes", "No" etc., The overall phone is slower. The higer resolution screen drains the battery faster. It is said that the sound is NOT as loud as the original 6230. Selecting ring volume level 4 or 5 causes the phone ring in an ascending format (low at first then gradually gets higher). The music player has less functionality eg. In original 6230 while the music player is shown on screen, pressing navigation keys left, right would pause and unpause a song. The T9 dictionary according to GSM-Arena is now different and not as effective as the original 6230's. Those are the disadvantages I know of, there may be more.
When it comes to deciding which phone to buy it all boils down to what you want to do with the phone BUT for me the Nokia 6230 will always be the best cellular phone.
