Got this phone earlier this yr (bout june) on the network 3 for £15 a month (600 sms/mms & 75mins voice), at first i thought this phone would be another tacky chip give away by the network, buttt..
THIS PHONE IS BRILLIANT, ive had a few errors with the software, but Nokia and 3 have been brilliant solving this;
The keypad froze and permantly locked, Nokia updated the software over the GPRS network and the phone went into SAFE-Mode (Self repair mode as i know it!), it has since done it again but the phone goes into the safe mode and fixes itself!!! BRILLIANT!!!
Other than that there are no problems with the phone!!
ALSO, ive seen many ppl comparing this phone to the N80, U CANT DO THAT, ones a symbiant phone the other isnt!!. If you want a phone with a operating system like windows get the N80, if not get the 6288, value for money get the 6288.
this is one of nokias best phones out (Except the N95!)
GET IT!!

how big (in inches) is the display screen? and when you take a picture with this phone, can you do it without opening it up and just turning it sideways?

i've compared the n80 and the 6288 and what i saw, n80 has no spring when u open the slider & the displays : 6288 has got a brighter & true colors display than n80, the 6288is better than n80, this is my opinion ,

the 6288 is just a normal phone like the old 6230 except that its updated and has better specifications. Its a non-OS phone since its not a symbian phone!
it can't multi task
you cant install .sis files but at the same time it doesn't lag and is more reliable ^_^

Nokia 6288's features is same like W850i. At first I would like to buy W850i, but after comparing the features and prices, Nokia 6288 are worthy to buy. 6288 and 6280 are slightly different but for outlook the 6288 are much more better than 6280. Thanks =)

there are no huge changes. Just a few updates and upgrades. 6288 looks cooler;)
and about your other question. IRRC(if i recall correctly) your sim card and the sation of the tower has the major impact on your phones over all reception. the antennae in the phone is simply to transmit the signal. So in conclusion. i dont think it should have a problem
i dont really no much about that sort of thing so that is just a logical guess

you can't compare the 6288 with the n80 function-wise, since the latter is of the symbian family while the 6288 is just a normal phone. Though hardware-wise for me the 6288 has better sliding mechanism compared to the n80 which really and honestly seems like it has no spring at all! But still its all a matter of preferences and with what you'll feel comfortable and with how much functionality you'll need and expect with your phone ^_^
