They have their own business model chalked up, their own reasoning behind it and their own product portfolio to follow. The reasoning behind their decision have been published on various publications and some shared the same for your enlightenment.

          You may have your own reasoning behind not following it, and I respect your own decision. Follow what you heart says is right.

                RishiGuru, 10 Apr 2020HMD openly stated they made a mistake in the naming scheme ... moreSo your only reasoning behind it being that there's the meaningless Zeiss branding, and HMD's pointless announcement. Samsung can suddenly make an announcement saying they made a mistake and the S20 is actually a successor to the A90 5G, when it very clearly isn't. Same thing here. My point stands. Nokia releases a phone in the 7 series, then almost a year later releases another phone in the 7 series at about the exact same price. It's a successor. Whether they want to call it that or not.

                  Devil2Death, 06 Apr 2020FYI : Nokia 7.1 was not successor of Nokia 7 Plus. It was N... moreHMD openly stated they made a mistake in the naming scheme of their models by introducing Plus variants during 2018. It overly complicated their lineup and people got confused. So from 2019 their Plus models went one rank higher. This also applied to other models from 6, 7 & 8 series.

                  8 series became 9 series
                  7 Plus series got 1+ to 8 series
                  6 series became to 7 series

                  It is easy to identify this shift if you take a closer look at their Zeiss branded Nokia phones.

                  8 & 9 always had Zeiss branded optics
                  7 Plus had Zeiss so new 8.1 also got it
                  Nokia 6.1 had Zeiss branding and thus the new 7.1 also had it.

                  Nokia 6 Plus was a China specific phone which got released later and never followed their international naming scheme. Hence from 2019, Nokia 6.2 and its below models never got Zeiss optics.

And yes I am right because of price and the branding. LG wouldn't release a successor to a V series phone under the G series. Samsung wouldn't release a successor to an S series phone under the A series. And Nokia wouldn't release a successor to a 7 series phone under the 8 series.

                          joe nodden, 08 Apr 2020What are you talking about.They were launched at the same price so the 7.1 is the successor? No, the successor to the 7 plus is nokia 8.1. The previous user clearly explained everything and you're arguing that you're right based on price and nothing else.

                                  Nokia 7 was originally launched in China exclusively & never made outside the chinese market. Don't get confused between 7 & 7 plus.
                                  Nokia 7 plus/8.1/8.3 -> Higher midrange phones
                                  Nokia 8/8 sirocco/9 -> Flagships

                                    HAHAHAHA oh my goodness. Nokia is such a terrible company. I just realized they went from the Snapdragon 660 in this thing to the 636 in it's successor. Then, it took them to generations to not get a better SoC, no no no, they went with the same 660 in this thing! Nokia has to be one of the worst companies I've ever seen.
