Hi Vinay T, I have read your posts done recently and I guess you have a good knowledge about E71 and E63. I would like to ask your opinion about E72. Have you used E72 and how would you rate it against E71. Recently I bought E71 but after only 2 weeks of use, suddenly it turned off and never could switch it on again. I never even charged. I tried to remove the battery and re-install it and even tried to connect to my laptop via pc suite and flash the firmware but failed in every respect. Finally I took it to Nokia and waiting for repair to be done. I thought E71 was more stable than E72 but than this incident has shaken my trust with E71. Please share your view. Thanks.

On the phone internet and GPRS are about the same unless you are using WiFi.
The maps have to use a lot of data to show you the map in various forms - map, satellite view, hybrid, terrain etc. For this 28 MB of download is not sufficient. It is just a feeder program. This then downloads the actual map data when you search for a place. And this can be huge in amount.
OVI maps are not as good as google maps are. Google has covered the entire globe and you can not escape wherever in the world you be, while OVI is not as extensive. I am presently in a house on a very remote hill top in Himachal Pradesh and Google shows my house etc while OVI does not. It shows the map alright but does not show the house as it does not have a satellite view of the globe. Although all the places are there, large and big, but the coverage is of different level.
And when you configure the settings of either, you have to give the access point for sending and receiving data, if you remember. hence some sort of internet access is necessary, GPRS or WiFi.

I've accidentally erased the folder named "private" on my memory card..the memory card which already comes with the box the 2gb ones..i believe that it contains important files which is needed by the phone like for example the MIMO file something like that..is it ok eventhough ive accidentally erased it? does my E71 run like the same?

[deleted post]E71 is wisest choice as it has mature firmware than E71 and its build quality is finer. Also cheaper.

                          Vinay/Gunjan and other experts-

I have not used GPS before and DO NOT have internet access on my E71 and no GPRS plan either.

I installed nokia maps sis file and downloaded India map (26MB) through Map Loader which downloaded successfully. I open ovi maps and but it does not show any map.

I have setup internet offline mode onthe phone

Since I am not familiar with this GPS, please help:
                          1) Do I need at least internet or GPRS or both from mobile network to see any map?
                          2) Is there any way to see and navigate GPS map in offline mode?
                          3) If you are from other small towns in India outside of four metros - does it mean you cannot see maps of those cities?

                          Please help if you know.

just won a bid on this phone. cannot wait to get my hands on it :) all i need to do now is to get it unlocked and debranded. i am assuming that unlocking is quite easy and can be done from most local shops. but anyone know any easy and foolproof methods of debranding so i can update the firmware ?

In order to setup my new E71 by tomorrow, I was following someone's post few days ago which starts like this-

Today I have successfully updated my E71 Ovi map. The process is as follows:

                                      1. Download and install Map Updater in your PC from Nokia site.
                                      2. Download and install Map Loader also in your PC.
                                      3. Install PC-suite in your PC.
                                      4. Connect E71 to your PC in PC suit mode.
                                      5. Open Map Updater and then automatic update of Ovi Map 3.0 will start (if PC is connected to Internet)
                                      ...

I tried searching Map Updater and found references somewhere
                                      a) Nokia has it in beta stage (Setup_Nokia_Maps_Updater_1.0_beta_4 - 4MB file)
                                      b) Setup_Nokia_Maps_Updater_1.0.8.exe (19MB file?) or even
                                      c) Setup_Nokia_Maps_Updater_1.0.10.exe

Nowhere on Nokia site, I could find 'Map Updater' download. It always referred to 26MB Map Loader which I downloaded.

My question is should I use this 'Map Updater beta' version or there really is genuine 1.0.8.exe or 1.0.10.exe file. Can someone please give exact link for the download from Nokia for Map Updater?

                                      Thanks
