You can go to Menu -> Tools -> Settings -> Phone -> Network -> Network Mode -> Choose 'Dual Mode'
For me, the settings above makes the phone automatically switch to 3G network when available. Hope this helps.

Nice recommendation there! I've been looking on ways on how to use the front facing camera outside of video calling. But I saw that CameraFX is EUR 12.99!! I think I'll pass. Hehe. Are there cheaper/free alternatives? :-)

I have an E71 but not an E5. I would think that E5 has better hardware specs because it was launched 2 years after E71. It has more recent version of Symbian and S60 too.
However, E71 has a more premium and high-end feel because of its metal body. It has a few under the hood features (although some might not be useful in everyday use). It also has front facing camera while E5 doesn't. But better check with your country/region because this is a 2008 smartphone and might not be available in your market anymore.
Normally, E5 would be the recommended phone because it is more recently released. However, I'm biased with E71 so this is what I'll recommend. :-)

Nokia E5 has better specs because it is released 2 years after E71. It has double the RAM of E71, higher megapixel camera (although fixed-focus), better video, faster processor. It's also using a more recent software (although not that much difference: E5 is Symbian 9.3, E71 is Symbian 9.2). Based on GSMArena's current info on pricing, it looks like this is cheaper too.
Nokia E71, however, has better build quality. I have one and it really feels a premium, high-end smartphone because of its metal body. It has a lot of under the hood features that, although might not be useful always, are nice to have. It also has a front facing camera (E5 doesn't), in case you find it useful. But you might want to check first if this is still available in your country/region because this is a 2008 phone and might not be in stores anymore.
Other than these, all the features are the same. Both are Eseries phones so you cannot go wrong with either. But if you ask me, I'm biased with E71, so this is what I recommend. :-) I've been using it for more than 2 years.

Its pretty easy to use the front camera on your Nokia e71 phone..
..All u need to do is to download an application called CAMERAFX... Open it and click on OPTIONS---CAMERA--USE FRONT CAMERA...thats all..
..pretty easy... Have been rocking with it for long... ENJOY cos this fone is the BEST

i have been using this fone from more than two years .i have tried even other brands but faced many problems .even after long time i found there is no other fone like 71 this fone have very gud battery even can use 3 days double cam slim .realy awesome fone.

my vibration option doesnt work in any profiles!
n also i cnt even pick up calls sometimes!!!! suddenly the phone restarts a couple of times!!
