Nokia Explore and Share short- range transfer tech now on video

23 February, 2010

We just stumbled upon a Nokia Research Center video demoing their Explore and Share short-range radio technology for Nokia devices. The technology is highly secure as it requires physical contact between devices, but it's wireless since you don't need to plug any cables in the phone.

Nokia Research Center, or NRC for short, first presented the Explore and Share tech at the Nokia World event last September. But this is the first proper video we see demoing the thing.

NRC is not disclosing the nature of the new wireless technology but we know it consumes "ultra low" power and it allows transfers of at least 20Mbits (guestimated !) as the guy on the video downloads a full album within 10 sec. Sounds like TransferJet, but it seems slower.

Unfortunately, for now the main planned application of the new tech is uploading content to the phone from electronic "vending computers" in mobile phone retail stores. Not really exciting!
