hey wp8lvr, can you tell whether all lumia phones would get 8.1 update?

Microsoft upgrade blunder gives people one more reason
not to buy a Windows Phone

    By Preston Gralla

As if people needed one more reason not to buy a
Windows Phone, Microsoft has given them another: A
Windows Phone 8 device you buy today may not be able
to be upgraded to Windows Phone 8.1. Then again,
maybe it can. Either way, Microsoft isn't saying. This is
no way to help a struggling smartphone operating
    system.

Computerworld's Matt Hamblen tried to find out from
both Nokia and Microsoft whether existing Windows
Phone 8 devices will be able to be upgraded to Windows
8.1. The bumbling non-answers he was given are
    astonishing.

Hamblen got in touch with Nokia and asked whether
    Nokia's Windows 8 Phones, including the high-end
Lumia 1020 and the lower-cost Lumia 520 would be
upgradable to Windows 8.1. A Nokia spokeswomen
    emailed him this answer:

"We don't comment on future products, but
    Microsoft has confirmed that smartphones
running Windows Phone 8 will be upgradeable
    to Windows Phone 8.1."

Seems pretty clear, doesn't it? But clarity, apparently,
isn't something that Nokia or Microsoft is interested in.
Two hours later she sent back a non-clarification with
    this non-answer:

    "Microsoft has confirmed that smartphones
running Windows Phone 8 will be upgradeable."
Upgradeable to what? you might wonder. Nokia isn't
saying. Either is Microsoft. The company told Hablen
that the Windows Phone operating system:
"is upgradeable ... If or how individual devices
are upgraded has not been announced."
Thanks, Microsoft. That clears up things.

Jack Gold, an analyst at J. Gold Associates, was harsh
but right on target when he said this to Hamblen about
Microsoft's refusal to provide an answer to whether
Windows Phone 8 devices will be able to be upgraded to
    Windows 8.1:

"Of the majors, only Microsoft seems to be hiding
the facts or at least not being straight about
them. Users have a right to expect a yes or no
answer" as to whether their specific devices are
upgradeable. In this case, both Microsoft and
Nokia are at fault for not being straight with
their customers, which seems like a repeat of the
same story we saw the last time Windows Phone
    had a major upgrade."

The upgrade he's referring to is Windows Phone 7 to
    Windows Phone 8 --- Windows Phone 7 devices couldn't
be upgraded to Windows Phone 8. And Gold was being
gentle with Microsoft here, because he calls the
company one of "the majors" when it comes to a
smartphone operating system. Windows Phone 8 has a
market share of only around 3% . Calling Microsoft a
major is a bit of a stretch.

Microsoft is so far behind in the smartphone market that
it can't afford blunders like this. Any phone you buy
should be able to be upgraded to at least a point release
in the operating system -- from Windows Phone 8 to
Windows Phone 8.1, for example. People expect that,
    and justifiably so.

Microsoft should also be honest with people about
whether phones they're considering buying today will be
able to be upgraded to a minor operating system
upgrade in the next several months. Not to do so is
arrogance -- and when you've got a 3% market share
you can't afford to be arrogant.

If I were considering buy a Windows Phone today, I'd
cross it off the list. I'm sure other people feel the same
way. Why buy a phone that may not run the newest
operating system that will be released in a few months?
And why buy from a company that won't answer the
most basic question about a phone's capabilities?

Battery is awesome .. may I say the best I've ever seen on a smart phone since 2009.

I've been using the phone for quite a while now and it gives the following. 25%+ charging rate means you can full a battery in less than 4hrs. I usually use it for 16-20hrs everyday before charging it at night. If you use WiFi continuous which I did unintentionally one day it would take around 14hrs. Using the camera intensively which I also had to do would only render the same consumption as the WiFi. However continuous video capture will render the lowest battery life, its not a camcorder so this shouldn't be a problem.

The Camera is more than exceptional ... be it macro or far range or even in complete darkness

I've almost never seen a camera since my last Nokia C7 that good in the colors perspective it out performs Lumia 1020, 925 and even the very good 920 all of which even have higher performance in other perspectives lack the color perfection of this phone, not to mention there battery is awful which is a fatal issue, at least for me. to verify the colors please check my unedited instagram photos @mohamedhph or just search hashtags #L720 #Lumia720 or #Lumia 720

i was previously using an android phone and i moved from android to Windows OS and my decision was correct. No hang no lags i m completely sorted out.
Nokia rocked it again...... Samsung should learn something from nokia pricy smartphones with less features

Better go for the replacement. As a user of the same phone even i had to admit that hanging probs occur too often. If possible netter switch out of Windows platform itself. Given below are the problems of OS

                                1) Single volume control for entire mobile(u reduce the volume when u play the game and after the game u ll not notice any calls. Sounds weird?? Yes because when u reduce volume even ringer volume will be reduced.

                                2) Volume can be increased or decreased only thru the button at right side. I am so unlucky that side button doesnt work for lowering the volume so whether its ringer or games or music i got to hear oly with full volume. Is it too much to ask windows to provide volume adjustments thru software.

                                3) 3rd nonsense is the sim slot. Once u insert the sim and close it its completely locked. U need to carry small minute pin which nokia gives always with u. With that pin only u ll be able to eject the sim. If u lose that pin u r struck up with single sim always.(Carrying stylus always with Note makes sense but carrying this useless pin everywhere just tests ur patience level)

                                4) I am a regular Nokia user and never have noticed this weird camera problem before. The problem is bright light photography is a utter nonsense and in the middle of photo u ll c a bright patch of light. Its debated that when u change the camera setting manually before taking bright light photo it comes out well. So pray to god that ur precious moment is frozen till u open camera settings, adjust it to bright light and then u focus and click.

                                5) No desktop or live wallpaper support => Accepted(Doesnt make any functional difference but still a sacrifice being made for nokia)

                                6) No file manager => I accepted even this thinking that only impact would be i will not be able to see file manager details, move files here n forth nor create a new file, or will not be able to rename a existing file nor group all applications into one(for eg: all browser apps into folder "Browser"). But there is still more to it

YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DOWNLOAD ANY FILE FROM ANY WEBSITES.

Yes...... When u click on download link ur browsers(all windows browsers includes default IE, mini browser, touch browser) just hangs.

But UC browsers latest upgrade does allow this download but it depends on mood of UC browsers as it just hangs most of the time.

                                7) Video clarity of this model is average

Ok enough of cons lets come to pros

                                1) Slim and sleek unibody design(This is what nokia advertises and its true). Amazing design with weight being evenly distributed.

Note: I dropped my mobile recently and there is a clear scratch visible on the side body of the phone which looks ugly. But mind it is a unibody design and hence i cant change that separately and have to carry on with it always. Dont be upset that even pros comes with cons

                                2) Excellent battery life. (No cons at all.. Absolutely amazing. Even with 2-3 hrs of 3g browsing, 3 - 4 hrs of music and bit of gaming(less than a hr perhaps) the battery lasts a day. To be frank this is the only point i still hold this phone.

To conclude for the market price Nokia had offered everythink it could, right from the battery, slim design, gorilla glass, decent loud speakers etc but microsoft just ditches all the above features offered by Nokia.

Windows lovers do argue that windows runs with less hardware requirements(for eg: 1GB ram, dual core and not quad core processors, less space for APPS etc). But when android phone maker gives me 2GB RAM or more, Quad core processors, more internal storage etc for the same cost i pay for windows mobile why the hell do i have to worry about the hardware requirements

My Nokia Lumia has given me the worst luck of all times,

The phone storage used up very rapidly eventhough I have set the photo and videos to be stored in SD card.

the system showed there is 3 GB in 'others' and I could not do anything about it. My phone storage now is 0

The vendor suggested to reset to factory setting and after 24 hours it's still resetting and no sign of recovering.

I am so sad with this, the phone is only 4 months old.
