However, sometimes call quality seems below par (unusual for a Nokia) wireless seems slow sometimes and I haven't managed to get NFC to work with either my older Nokia C7 or my NFC headset. Anyone else experience this?

Because hd games in windows phone 8 are not compatible with the phones which hai lower than 1gb ram.
                          Eg. Asphalt 7.

Better Ram and processor will at least hold good for a year or two. I don't want to be left behind when MS announces next generation OS. Think I'll go for L820.

Am I the only one who prefers the shorter (4.1 mm difference) and a little wider (1 mm difference) 820 in terms of size? Yes, the 720 is thinner (0.9 mm difference) but the 820 feels really good in the hand.

But then a few days later Asphalt 7 was announced and Xbox version currently requires 1 GB of RAM in order to run. In the future we might get games/apps/updates that need the extra ram and superior processing speed.

I visited a mobile store and had a hands-on experience with the 820, buying one coming Friday!

That depends on how the price it though, I would estimate it would be around 75% of the cost of the 820 at least, and since the 820 is getting cheaper, it may even be priced closer.
