Anonymous, 03 Dec 2012Google is blocking WP8 from accessing maps.google.com, not ... moreOf course not Nokia is blocking access to Google maps; Microsoft is blocking the access to Google maps not Google, Goggle will just gain WP 8 users to use their system. Microsoft designed on purpose their web browser to be incompatible with Google maps. Each browser must have a signature and runtime for the scrips the website is based on and Microsoft decided to sign the browser differently from Windows OS tablet and desktop also to lack the implementation of runtime for scripts that implement Google maps.

So it in not Google which blocks the access to Google maps, it is no Nokia, it is Microsoft which blocks the access to Google maps creating in WP8 an incompatible web browser with the code that implements Google maps. If Google would block the access to WP8 then no other third party app would work with Google maps. All Microsoft would do is not not sign the browser with other name than Windows 8 for desktop and then Goole would not know whether the connection is with WP 8 or Win 8 on desktop. So Microsoft is the one which wishes to promote Nokia maps blocking Google maps.

Google is blocking WP8 from accessing maps.google.com, not Nokia here. Google is very anti competitive. The only app they have is Google Search.

There are detractors here and the silence about compass in default maps and the silence about the block to Google maps in WP 8 web browser I mean IE is a fact which gsm arena has to speak about otherwise all reviews they make are waste of time to pay attention for.

AnonD-73681, 02 Dec 2012You really have no idea about Nokia maps and offline naviga... moreI wrote about Nokia HERE and it does not have compass integrate on map although the hardware has it.

Why don't we focus on the maps which are on default with the phone as you unpack it and such maps do not have compass.

Why Nokia using WP8 cannot access web version of Google maps in its web browser and nobody seem to have try to see google maps in WP8 Internet Explorer browser? Nobody was curious to see and find that you are blocked to use Google maps on WP 8 not even on web version and why all al okay with such restriction is very distrurbing.

but you ’re missing a Hunhred millions (smartphone unit) sale in 2012, by not adopting Android platform apart from the main base Window OS.

Anonymous, 02 Dec 2012I downloaded the whole Texas and I can see every street jus... moreTexas has few streets comparing with California where most of GPS users in the World live and where Android and iOS is born.

Besides as I was very explicit, without having set a route for destination and just using default Nokia maps, not drive version that is an add on, so for default version there is NO Compass integration and the map does not rotate and there is no arrow to indicate the cardinal points. In comparison Google maps and Appple maps Have compass integration for maps that are not in route mode or drive mode. You may have in car professional GPS as many new cars in USA have but if you get off in a large city or intersection without having a plan and route set the Nokia maps cannot give you Orientation for direction. Do you like waking 50 feet just to get a clue whether you head to north east west or south? That is stupid and lacks any good reeason why the maps for presentation, not drive mode, do not have a compass when the competition has and the only explanation is that the software code is old and not updated to a hardware what nowadays has electronic compass.

The download feature of maps is useless and replaces last download so if you live in Texas and have some street names in download and plan to fly to New York you lose last Texas download and get only some New York map area and if you wish both area and include New York and Texas you do not get details of streets even if you gave 64 GB space on phone the size downloaded is very small and cannot be increased.

About the fact that you cannot attach many documment to the same email you send is another huge limitation passed with silence.

Lack of file manager too store what PDF files and text files and pics and movies is another misterious silence.

Impossibility to download any file from web without a dedicate app for each site is a huge limitation in 2012, close to 2013.

Some sites change and we wish to save the current pages locally on phone as a proof or later lecture and we cannot we can read only what is present on Web using WP8. Why I cannot save web pages for offline reading when news pages change and I may wish to read the articles later, and the phone has much memory and the software for such download is not difficult to be implemented, it is on Android and despises any logic from the largest software company Microsoft. Yes the dealt wit AT&T to access the most 4G so you cannot save web pages and see what was written on web an hours later maybe removed. That is not benefit that is cruel restriction.

Whatever you read sums to one single conclusion WP8 is more restricted than iOS and Android, it has few features, fewer possibilities to be customized, few apps and drains the battery faster than iOS and Android take together, so it is a champion at sucking electricity.

All praise the common patform. But WP p
Apps on Intel still do not work and those are the most and best. The benefits of having Win NT as base core is NULL with such WP8 when you cannot get a file manager to set security to each document file you cannot set security for each program and you cannot create multiple profiles for multiple users to loggin on such WP8. All prior listed missing features make Win NT definition the what you use from such OS core? Nothing you do not use any feature that defines Win NT.

You are stuck with what you get in Microsoft online store and you get few apps with missing feature and wishes for better.

One single and most eloquent example about bad intentions to have freedom of choise is the impossibility to use Google maps not even web version on WP8. The browser was on purpose designed to block access to Google maps. This is done in order not to be able to compare side to side Google maps with Nokia maps on the same phone in the same place become it would be evident than that Nokia maps are poorly designed and lack features and nobody you use them if they may use Google maps on the same phone. You are forced by Microsoft to use an inferior mapping system.

Anonymous, 02 Dec 2012I am surprised that nobody on this forum has not noticed or... moreI downloaded the whole Texas and I can see every street just fine without WiFI nor data connection. Nokia Drive+ works fully offline. You can search for places offline in Nokia Drive+ and start voice navigation while offline. That said, Bing Maps is better than Nokia Maps in the US right now. Their Nokia Drive+ is still in beta and bet Nokia Maps is still beta too. WP8 is a new OS. WP8 is now using the same core as Windows 8 and Windows RT. WP7 is using the ancient Windows CE kernel that doesn't even support multi core processor.

Anonymous, 02 Dec 2012I am surprised that nobody on this forum has not noticed or... moreYou really have no idea about Nokia maps and offline navigation.
                            1. They are two separate apps, Maps (actually NokiaHERE) is a high class app with Navteq maps updated more than once a year. There are 2d and 3d map view, terrain view, satellite view and soon will be the street view too, similar to what Google has in pc version.
                            2. There is a compass in Nokia devices even some very old and outdated ones which can rotate the map respective to real world directions. However maps are for reference purposes only, if you want a navigator, then Nokia Drive does it. Maps can be downloaded from Nokia server acc. to your needs, full countries or partial for big countries, whole world is included too. Set a destination after that and it calculates a route totally offline, and guides you with turn by turn free lifetime voice navigation.
                            3. There are many tips and tricks for getting out the most from Nokia mapping services (maps, drive, public transport, guides, city lens, etc) excellent service for totally free and by saving a lot of data, you get what you need in a wifi area and use when you want.
                            4. After using Nokia mapping services, Tomtom and Garmin in my eyes started to look useless, i didn't need them ever more.
                            5. Offline navigation or points of interest services for Android and iOs (all what is available) are damn frustrating, i have tried google, tomtom, navigon, navfree, waze, etc, etc, are at best simply useless, can't compare any with Nokia in all terms. All the paid and data hungry navigation services you may find for the SGNote2 or iPhone5 are a joke compared to the free Nokia services on an outdated c7, n8, x7, e7 Belle phone, i've tried that.
                            6. Map services on the new Lumias will be just impossible to rival, try them and then let's talk.

I am surprised that nobody on this forum has not noticed or does not really use Nokia maps otherwise you would find issues: you do not have integarated phone's electronic compass in Nokia maps and you cannot spin the map or get an arrow for north or direction of keeping the phone do if you do not have a route and just watch the location current location on map you do not know in what direction to go because you do not know in what direction is north west east and south. This is a huge limitation and google maps and apple maps all spin the map or show a compass on map that is updated with the orientation of the phone. Nokia maps are 10 years old and the feature to download maps is useless for USA where the area is huge and the portion downloded is limited to 10-20 square miles on which you see the street names or if you download to larger area you cannot see the street names.

Ii is much fuss about WP8 and Nokia but realistically such pair just prove to be a mediocre system, nothing to be remembered and used 3 years from now. It does not bring any benefits over iPhone and Android like I expected a global file manager and side loading, no customization over home screen and system fonts and layout, some people may just wish classic icons on home screen, no possibility to upload and download files using the web browser so you need an app for each site that lets you download or upload pictures and documents or executable programs. You are bound to Microsoft store as iPhone users are at least iPhone users have an alternative with Cydia you do not have any solution to break the limits imposed by Microsoft.

The pre-orders in the Netherlands are even more than normal sales of iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3. Nokia Lumia 920 really will be one of the most popular devices here. Good news.

My ideal secondary phone would be a wp8 Nokia with 3.2'' screen, 800mhz processor, 400mb ram, 10mm thickness, 1500mah battery, 3.2mp camera, no storage but microsd card slot. Wouldn't it make sense for up to $200 sim free?
