I have had this phone for about a week now and overall I do like it. I am impressed with all of the features that this phone comes with. From the built in wifi to the nokia ngage games, this phone packs a lot of features for a great price. It is comfortable to hold, looks great, and is my favorite type of phone...a bar shaped one. I upgraded to this phone from a sony ericsson w810i after looking forever to find a suitable replacement.
Even though this phone has a lot of great features, there are some things that I don't like or think could be better. First of all, the direction pad and center button dont seem to work the best. What I mean by that is that sometimes ill want to hit the center button, but ill somehow hit a directional button. That is annoying when trying to quickly select something...maybe my fingers are too big!
Another thing that irks me about this phone is how complicated it seems to get to any one application or section on the phone. It just seems like there are too many selection screens to make a phone call or look at my past list of calls. Not a huge deal, but just something to keep in mind when thinking of buying this phone.
The phone also has a tendency to lag a little bit when opening some applications. I have heard that applying an update to the phone can fix this but I have yet to try it.
One finally thing that is a minor inconvenience to me about this phone is that it didnt come with a built in torch application. How is this possible in this day and age on phones with led flashes? My ericsson had a flashlight app and that phone is 4 years old! I have downloaded brightlight.rar to remedy this problem, but have yet to figure out how to get it on my phone. Once I am able to do that, then this problem will be solved.
Now that may seem like a long list of complaints, but they really are minor compared to all of the great features that come with this phone. Like I said before the wifi is great. You can go on down to a coffee shop and browse the web on your phone while having your coffee.
The nokia games are great. It's nice to be able to play a decent 3d game on my phone after having to play lame games on the ericsson I had.
One of the main selling points for me was the 5MP camera. I use my phone as my camera whenever I go on vacation. I used the 2MP camera on my ericsson for ever and it worked OK...but comparing pictures from that with the N79 makes me wish I had it on all those past trips.
The phone has changeable back covers that when you put on a different cover, the phones theme detects the cover and changes the theme of the phone. For example I normally have the blue cover on, so my phones background and menus are blue. But if I switch to the brown cover, all that stuff automatically changes color. Kinda neat, not really useful, but I thought it was pretty cool.
I also use my phone as an mp3 player, and I really like the bluetooth stereo on this phone. When used to use my sony on the treadmill, which doesny have bluetooth stereo, I was constantly having to push my headphones back onto my ears because the cord would get caught on a switch, so I put under my shirt, but my shirt would tug on it....very annoying. With bluetooth stereo, that is a thing of the past. It is sooooooo nice to not have to constantly adjust my headphones while working out.
So overall, the Nokia N79 is a great phone for many many reasons. Sure it has a few minor issues, but I haven't seen a phone out there that doesn't. I really don't think that there is a "perfect" phone, but this one to me is as close as they come. Although I do highly recommend this phone, I would suggest trying it out at a store before you buy it to see if it is really for you.

Rani, 27 Dec 2009What is firmware? and for what purpose it is used? is this ... moreBasically, a firmware is the operating system for the mobile. People use the mobile with the initial firmware and report the things that mostly bug them, for eg, slow navigation, freezing, restarting problems, etc. Then the Nokia people release another firmware for the mobile, ie they update the existing firmware in order to correct/fix the named problems. Firmware updates are very important as they help you get a better user experience with your mobile and thus, enjoying it better. This usually applies for every mobile phones.

Hope i've been helpful, feel free to ask anything related.

I've got this phone about 5 months ago. It's still going well although it's getting slower and certain software issues are arrising! Although it's a great phone! Nothing that a Software Upgrade can't fix! I would recommend this phone to anyone! The 5 MegaPixel Carl Zeiss Camera is very good as well. I got the red, brown and white backcovers in my box.

                              Hey,
I'm now the proud owner of a new black N79(had to visit a number of shops to get the black one).I previously owned a SE K660i(until i lost it), so the two phones cant really compare. The result is this: the N79 is an amazing phone, loaded with a huge amount of features crammed into the palm of my hand. And the price is pretty neat too, considering the number of features, and the 5MP cam. The call quality is gud, so is the Music player. The cons: Camera !!!. The photo quality doesn't really seem to be 5Mp(sad, considering I brought it for the cam), & photos taken in fluorescent light r horrible, bad skin color reproduction, lacking depth, n totally washed-out. Not bad in outdoor lighting but SE has better cam quality. The cable port shouldn't have been placed right under the memory card slot, seems accident prone. If anybody can give me tips on taking better photos in low lighting plz do...

                                    1) How to update firmware ? I am yet to buy the phone. Should I ask a phone with latest firmware at the shop itself or should we mod the phone after buying ? If yes how is that done.
                                    2) Can you fwd the link to ur blog pls? Would be informative.

                                      Hey all...
Upgraded my N79 software to 31.002 few weeks ago. I did notice a few improvements.
The camera's pic quality seems to have gotten better. I'm loving the pictures I've been taking lately.
Also, the GPS got stronger... I get better signal strength & positioning accuracy.
Version 32.001 isn't available for FOTA here in the Philippines, is it? Would it be worth upgrading to?
Oh, and I posted this comment with my N79. :)
