MdN, 21 Sep 2013There's one Private folder on each drive and one on your me... moreOK. I went back into NetQin. When it opens up, it says, “Your phone is safe”.
Then I tap “scan” and select Full Virus Scan. So, I get a dual engine scan. It scans over 11,826 of God alone knows what! I see - Threats found: 0, throughout the entire process. At the end, a new screen comes up: No threats found, below which are a multitude of things in the phone which are given the all clear with 5 green stars each. So the scan shows nothing is amiss.
Now when I go into “Update virus DB”, there is a big green circle with a white tick in it (which I think is an all clear). There is a box to allow you to tap to update the DB. In the second half of the screen is the Security Alert with the information on the virus. Now how do I interpret that? Like, “Danger, pot hole ahead”? Or: “Hey! You’re already in the pothole!” Well, to find that virus (if it is there) is like finding a needle in a haystack. So, I don’t think I will even attempt it. 11,826 is a hugely intimidating figure. But the investigation was interesting. So, I am resting that and going back to the PC problem tomorrow. Funny that NetQin works smoothly on Anna and not on Belle. Your question is encouraging. Maybe NetQin does not offer to delete because there is nothing to delete? Dear God! I hope so! Please let it be so!!! No location is given either.
My PC is working on Windows 7. I don’t know what Anti-virus is on it. I just follow the instructions and go around in circles sometimes. But I know that the malware protection is “off” although I did not turn it off – and I can’t get it to go back on and as well, I can’t get it to scan. It keeps saying “Out of date”. I mean, the PC is working but I have some discomfort about it. Your guitar strings don’t pop because you are using steel, lucky you. I can’t use those on my classical guitar. At the moment, I have no replacements and I’ll have to buy a whole set just to get two strings. Dunno what will happen on Sun. Somebody bought a set of steel strings for me in error. Maybe I’ll just use the two – temporarily. Oh shucks! I don’t know why I even considered recording You Tube songs. Habit, I guess. They sound so GREAT as a video download, especially with headphones. Way to go for me now :-). I'll holler if I need help with the PC but I've had enough for now.

Anonymous, 20 Sep 2013Uhm! Where is Private folder again???There's one Private folder on each drive and one on your memory card. ;-) When you access the phone via PC you should at least see the one on H: and I: drives. I guess your PC has to have "Show hidden files and folders" enabled. I can access them via Xplore too, and via MyExplorer but not via the default file manager. Anyway, don't bother, there's 5525 files and 796 folders inside "private" on my H drive. Doesn't NetQin offer to delete it? Or, when you scan, show where it is located? I'm not sure here as I only used an antivirus to hack my phone, which is still one of the funnier things about Symbian.
What Windows version and antivirus are you using? I just tried scanning the "private" "sys" and "system" folders on my H drive (just for a test, there are way more folders) with Avira and it worked. No detections, as I expected. I wonder how would I even get a virus when I mostly download images, videos or zip/rar files using Opera Mini or, rarely, UC Browser, and I expect their servers to have some protection too (they are both proxy browsers). Actually this is why I even prefer downloading via phone, let someone else take care of viruses If I visit some suspicious sites out of curiosity. >:-)
Well done. :-) I play black metal and my strings are 7-8 years old, but you manage to break two in one day. I guess you're playing something more violent. Scary lady! :-D Actually I don't think I EVER broke a string. :-) I guess with 2 down and 4 to go it's time to get a whole new set? First, just relax and wait for the bad times to go, can't be more than 3-4 days :-) Right, I missed one episode of the series I'm following, but it's on YouTube too. Downloaded while I was typing this, then to my N8 and then off to find a comfortable position. Hmmm, I don't want my brain replaced but I really wish I could defragment it from time to time. :-/

MdN, 20 Sep 2013I think NetQin has problems with Belle, you're on Anna. Or ... moreDon’t have a clue where this uninvited guest might be hiding – and even if I did, I would not know how to get rid of it. I’ll look in Private Folder but I would not know how to identify it because I’m sure it will not be waving a red flag for me. You know, at first I wondered if “data” had referred to your personal data on the phone or the data you bought.
I am working on my PC too and getting depressed by the hour over a security issue which I seem unable to resolve. I tried scanning the phone with the PC as you suggested but the scan is not coming up. I read where Microsoft is having some security problems and issued an emergency fix with a permanent fix to follow. I don’t know if there is any connection. And to compound matters and throw me further off the bend, I took a few minutes to take my mind off things and work on my “give back” hobby and “pop”, pause, “pop” - 2 guitar strings gone, one after the other, no doubt from overworking last weekend. At least they did not embarrass me then. When it rains it pours so have some coffee. I’m surviving on that these days. Interesting article on the batteries, but I am not letting that worry me right now. The minute I detect problems with mine, I’ll just go and have it replaced. I think everybody would prefer replaceable batteries because sealed batteries are real inconvenient. Pity they don’t have replaceable brains too, after all, it is all electrical :-).

Anonymous, 20 Sep 2013:-D How are you? Oh! I’m not bothered about that stupid vir... moreI think NetQin has problems with Belle, you're on Anna. Or something. I just Googled your virus name, yep, "The virus will automatically and frequently connect to the Internet which causes data loss. Meanwhile the applications are failed to uninstall which leads to mobile risks." Oh well. Do you have any idea where it is located? Probably one of the zillion folders in the "Private" folder. It obviously IS a Symbian virus, or maybe something that remained from some app. Faulty-app? Whats-app? Pirate-app? Who knows. :-) You probably didn't pick it up from the internet. I hope you can get rid of it. I never really looked into all this antivirus stuff, all is working well and I'm having enough to worry about with the antivirus on my PC right now. Looks like last night I somehow switched Web Protection off and only left Real-Time Protection. That's what you get when you're totally tired and sleepy, which is the reply to your first question. :-)
Btw, we were talking about batteries. Check this article out, and the poor N8 in the comments section: http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/flow/item/18407_Replaceable_batteries_again_ba.php

ani, 20 Sep 2013Hi, can someone help me with nokia stor, cause when i clic... moreAll the info you need for that and much more can be found if you go back a few pages. It will be worth your while to find the time to go and read up. Just work on your contingency plan. The N8 is about 3 years old, I think. I have some Nokia phones real long now and they are going good as the day I bought them. Not one of my Nokia phones ever died on me, no matter how old. So, treat your battery good and you can enjoy your N8 for a long time yet with normal use - not abuse.

I’m not bothered about that stupid virus at all because it is not affecting the phone system in any way. Nobody’s wasting their time to manufacture a Symbian virus as you said, so the attack may be a little oblique, maybe?
Well, hey! Your answer was so enlightening! I am now more puzzled than ever :-)). So, it is not a Symbian virus because nobody makes them; it is not from the internet; and it is not a PC virus by the mere fact that it was detected, because Symbian antivirus will not detect PC viruses. So what the hell is it? A phantom virus :-D ??? Good suggestion though. I’ll scan it on the PC.

I really see and feel that this is the best smartphone ever made. Awesome battery performance, crisp neat screen Gorilla glass protected, USB on the go Just unbelievably flexible, perfect picture and video in any situation. Great, i mean GREAT sound, full personalization of screen menus an themes. LOTS and LOTS of HD games. Compatibility with Nintendo´s WII Remote and PS3 Remote controllers, real HD HDMI out, i can go on and on. Just Superb. Sad that NOKIA ditch Symbian and went with Windows Phone, lame move

Anonymous, 19 Sep 2013Which anti virus is good for N8 if i download thru Nokia s... moreWell, I think you won't find Symbian viruses on the internet. I don't think anyone would bother to make one when there's Android. And I doubt any Symbian antivirus will detect PC viruses. If you're worried you can connect your N8 to PC in mass storage mode and scan it with your PC antivirus. Also, if you actually manage to get a PC virus on your phone I'm sure the antivirus on your PC would detect it.

Anonymous, 19 Sep 2013Which anti virus is good for N8 if i download thru Nokia s... moreI hope you get an expert answer to your appeal but to keep your problem bouncing, here goes (at the risk of sounding stupid). Are you sure you did not put your phone into crisis mode by loading it up with too much stuff? Do you have a ton load of emails and other stuff on it? Have you considered that by deleting the anti-virus apps you may have gotten back some badly needed mbs, thus the improvement you saw?
I installed Kaspersky first, then uninstalled it (never paid any attention to it). Then I installed NetQin and investigated it (maybe because it was “pretty”). I tried the garbage clearing and I was amazed at the amount of “garbage” that had accumulated in about 6 wks of gentle use (which took up space). I also got back about 25 mbs when I optimized. So now, I do the routine every week or so – just to feel good :-), especially when it says “Your phone is running good” :-).
I just updated the Virus DB which I neglected for far too long. I see I have a Security Alert. It says:
Virus name: s.expense.ClearLog.b
Threat level: Medium
Can’t imagine where that came from and as far as I see, it is not affecting my phone’s performance. Apparently, it causes data loss – but I don’t use data anyway, only WiFi. I would like to think that NetQin is doing its job??? I would not like to think that the virus got in because of NetQin!!! So far, I have not experienced that switching on & off, so I am not too sure that NetQin per se, caused it.
There you go! Some thoughts on the virus problem from a newbie. BTW, I don’t think there are much anti-virus options available.

mozzo, 19 Sep 2013i don't know what next to do i've being using this phone N8... moreIs it urgent that you change your N8 now? If not, just don't bother your head about it. It is only 2 years old and has a long way to go yet. When the time comes around that you have to get a new phone, you'll know what to do. If you are not impressed with any on the market then, just go: eenie, minnie, mynie, moe and pick any of the bad lot :-). But I am sure that by then, it would not reach to that. Let not your heart be troubled. We will all face that time. C'est la vie!
