Hi everybody,
Just returning home from a nokia outlet in mumbai- india. Had a hands on experience with the n8. it was magical. way better then any symbian fone i have ever used. There were issues with the demo phone.
anyways i went and booked two one for me and one for my brov (bday gift) in different colors. i chose blue and black (dark grey) for my brov. price is inr 26259.

For the past few days i have tried to restrain myself from being involved in the great debate going on in the opinion section. But after having played with the N8 for a good 30 mins i would like to voice my opinion.

Symbian^3 is still miles apart from the swiftness and user experience as the ifone. And not as powerful as the droids. However i felt it strikes a fine balance.
giving you a lots of apps and featues and lacking on the pace. Then there is the question of the apps store of both companies. While the ifone wins that department hands on, it loses out to the n8 on many aspects. free maps, camera, otg, wi-fi, videocall etc.
I am willing to concur that the music album browsing and foto browsing on the n8 felt similar to the ifone.
However ifone has used and is still using several nokia technologies. Mainly the GSM technology.

Comparing the N8 to the droids is a bit tricky though.
While there are known handsets that have used droid 2.2 on low speed processors, it is now requiring a lot more power hence all major handset manufacturers are now using 700mhz or above to run googles OS. Droid looks pathetic on smaller screens and their aps store is not that great.
I have used ifone, droid fones and nokias.
When the ifone was first introduced, i was one of the first people to buy it.It was something different from all the others. However once the fun of swyping and games ended i got bored. i am currently using the nexus one and i can't explain the problems i face with the battery drainage and other issues.
The ifone is like a lamborghini countach, looks gorgious and sleek, is well made, however all the things u want in the car are optional xtras,

The droids are like muscle cars, powerful and quick, but hideous in looks and runs out of fuel in no time.

The N8 on the other hand is like a Nissan GTR or R8.
looks pretty, has great technology and yet so austentatious that people shud consider u a playboy or
wealthy arab. well priced and so powerful and ferocious that it can beat a 911 round the nurburgring (related to gtr).

I have been patient during my tryst with the ifone and droids and yet had a bitter sweet experience. It sems only just that i give the new symbian a fair chance.

Maybe i will regret my decision in the future however, i am pretty sure i am going to enjoy and cherish it for the moment. Can't wait enough for it.

[deleted post]lol i wonder how ignorant some people get.
    Fact 1:
anssi vanjoki, smartphone chief over at nokia explicitly said at nokia world 2010 that the n8 wasnt geared to take on the likes the droid and iphone..meego is you research noob.
    Fact 2.
Get your facts straight, the n8 has clearly bin hailed as the best cameraphone on the market and with hyperX already hacking away, i see a good future ahead for this little tiger.
    Fact 3.
You fail at understanding optimised systems...symbian is optimised to work on a mobile phone..android is a virtual machine running ontop of a linux build, thats why it needs a higher clock speed for leg room in processing.
    Fact 4.
Am not buying the n8....am holding out for the n9..meego will rock android solidly..jus think of the n900...and then think of how well its successor will perform...why do you think nokia is so silent about it? evn at nokia world nary a peep was afforded...thats coz nokia is keeping its cards close to its chest...waiting..(that and they want the n8 to sell well, coz honestly the n9 would disrupt the n8's sales)

    oh, have a nice day

OthaB, 06 Oct 2010Will the N8 be able to upgrade to S^4 once released? Or is ... moreSymbian 4 will be a revolution of Symbian instead of evolution for Symbian 3. Therefore, Symbian 4 may require more hardware resources in terms of RAM and CPU. It may not perform well for the upgrade. No one knows it yet.

See how painful for Iphone 3GS users upgrade to Ios4, you will understand my point. So I would not expect the upgrade.

Are Ifans and Afans feeling seriously threatened by N8/Symbian. If N8 is not poor or inferior according to them, why do they bother to waste time and energy to come here to sell their phones and so. They can just stay where they can discuss their great phones and os and receipt people going there.

After being spoiled with great and fast UI of Desire, i could never go back to slow Symbian UI. Even if the N8 has a great cam. Sorry N8, having a great cam in a phone isn't enticing anymore.

TP, 06 Oct 2010The point here was about OS, we can even use the Hero as an... moreHi TP, yes milestone was at 600 Mhz, but that is a Cortex A8, Not an ARM11 core. That is a significantly faster CPU than the one in the N8. If we want to go into this deeper, we have to do it right. Fact of the matter is, Symbian is better in constrained environment, battery wise, memory wise, cycle wise. Lets not discuss where this difference becomes apparent, that is subjective, but the difference is there.

Now of course Moore's law is going to be nice for Android in that respect, but from a cost perspective Symbian still wins. And battery life is one thing Moore's law does not apply to :)

[deleted post]The point here was about OS, we can even use the Hero as an example as it has 256mb RAM, and a 528mhz CPU and can do Froyo, and as i said the Milestone which also at under 600mhz and 256mb RAM runs Android fine. S60v3s did 200mhz but we're off that so i dont know why you brought it up.
If you're going to result to personal insults then i suggest we end this here as i'd rather not lower myself to your level. Thanks. Atleast Wheez is mature enough to reply respectfuly and had great points to add to the discussion.

                            [deleted post]Let me rephrase that.

S^3 is better. Now matter how great your transitions looks, they dont mean dick all when your battery is dead.

At least gsmarena's move can be dismissed as a part of tech sites competition. And as a lot of mobile users will agree, i believe even die hard android fans will agree, that what's done to n8 is not fair. And so people will start believing that gsmarena is the only good source of mobile reviews, which is quite true, they got technical in some areas, and pull their verdict without any hints of bias. They always get most everybody else's approval.
