Nokia N8

There are rumors that the N8 will ship in limited editions as the software is too buggy and the webbrowser too slow, which is supposed to be fixed by an update in mid-November 2010 (which probably equals May 2011 in Nokia-time-tracking worlds). I would suggest release the phone in December when the software is really done and stands a chance against Android. In the meantime, in order to keep hardware specs competetive replace the 680MHz processor with 1GHz and double the RAM.
You’re on to something amazing with this phone! Everything looks very promising except for the buggy and slow software and I assume (since you’ve never shown it) the N95-like century old super slow browser. Don’t destroy it by releasing something that needs to be fixed later on. There are so many great features and ideas about this phone it would be a shame for all the developers who contributed building such an amazing piece of art.
One more thing: Please don’t follow the same approach as you did with the N95 where 1 month later you release the N95 8GB. I guess people would be really pissed off if the bought the N8 with a 680MHz processor and 256MB RAM in September and in November you decide to release the phone with 1GHz and half a gig RAM. That would probably cost you the last few supporters left out there.

Announced back in December 2009, Symbian^3 is now completely open source and has evolved into an even smarter operating system. The biggest change comes to the user interface and the introduction of multiple homescreen support, as found on the Maemo-powered Nokia N900. Multiple homescreens will be fully customisable with widgets able to be dragged and dropped into position, making it easier to organize your favourite apps. Multi-touch is another boon, letting you use smart touch gestures, such as pinching and stretching with finger and thumb, to easily zoom in and out of images with maximum precision.
Drawing cues from the Maemo school of multitasking, Symbian^3 will also have the same ability to run multiple apps simultaneously. Watch videos whilst listening to music or catching-up on the latest from your favourite websites. Multitasking has previously been a talent reserved for handsets at the highest end of the device spectrum, so this marks a serious evolution for Symbian and ushers in a new type of experience as yet untouched on mid-range Nokia smartphones.
The premium experience exuded by Symbian^3 carries through to entertainment. It supports HD output, meaning you’ll be able to hook your phone up to your hi-def TV, and playback videos and photos that you’ve captured on your handset in big-screen quality. The same goes for games, so dust off your thumbs.
There’s also a barrage of network improvements, including the ability to automatically switch from cell network to WLAN automatically, without interruption. It’s also primed for 4G networks.
The Symbian^3 platform is expected to be complete within the first half of 2010 and is anticipated to find a home on devices soon after.

Do you know why the N8 will run better than other OS’s on higher spec hardware??
Comparison with android:
Virtual Machine OS
Entire ROM must be loaded to memory at boot and the same for all applications.
Native OS,
OS demand paging, application demand paging, writeable data paging.
In other words, the same virtual RAM that people were jizzing themselves over on the N900 is pretty much available for the N8 in addition to better use of the RAM available. Android doesnt use any sort of demand paging, or WDP or virtual RAM, hence the hardware requirements.
Haha! No, I don’t want to spread fear. A country like Finland where every 3rd person works for Nokia has probably already understood how serious the situation has become with Apple, Samsung and Android. Of course Nokia has a huge market share in developing countries but for high-end products they definitely need to catch up. And that’s where the money is to be made!
As to the browser, if it’s so fast then why don’t we see an official Nokia video showing it? I’d be happy to be proven wrong!
Regarding RAM and processor, if Symbian is such an ultra-fast super-speedy operating system, imagine how much faster it would actually perform with a 1GHz processor and double the RAM! All the EVOs, Galaxys, Nexus Ones and iPhones wouldn’t stand a chance at all. Or does Symbian slow down on higher processor speed?

aero, 06 Aug 2010I didnt say about n900 sale success records or anything. Di... moreDo you own an N900? I returned it within 6 days of purchase. It had a great potential, but with 100 000 users after 5 months of release there aren't many useful and stable programs for it. Nokia apparently decided to let the community finish their job. Sadly, there isn't much community to do it. I didn't want to install dozens of apps on my smartphone, but I needed a good music player. Default MP doesn't even have any equalizer or presets. Come on! Was it too much to ask? And there is no decent MP available for Maemo 5. 6 months after the release, Ovi Maps application wouldn't allow me to search the map offline after I had loaded the complete map data. N95 had allowed me to do that, so what the hell, Nokia?
In Q2 2010 Nokia announced they wouldn't update n900 to MeeGo. Samsung probably has one of the worst after-sales support, but I expected Nokia to do better with n900 support :(
