Anonymous, 12 Jul 2010I'm confuse..SOme say August, some say October...Haih, dunn... moreOctober came up on some UK operator's road map. It is not necessary when Nokia puts the device out into the world. It may become available in August but that specific operator releases it in October. Do not forget that operators usually do plenty of own network testing and tuning to own network prior to offering devices.

A superb phone, just wondered if NOKIA could add a 4 inch SuperAMOLED with at least a 1Ghz Snapdagon, Android Gingerbread and a 1850 mAh Li-PO battery, this phone would become INVINCIBLE. To hell with the price, just make it.

n8 can really play divx average of 700 mb

                                    Key points below:

“Nokia N8 is more than a phone – it’s the first convincing PMP hybrid with 720p playback, HDMI out with 5.1 channel surround sound!”
Apparently, you could get (on the 16GB model) at least 30 90 minute movies (at 533MB per movie in MPEG4 h.264 – DivX average 700MB) . Though if you want more memory, you could just upgrade the memory card to 16GB or even 32GB.
5.1 was not expected in handsets, and has arrived much earlier than expected on the roadmap
industry is going towards an MPEG container; H.264 720p with a standardised audio stream based around 5.1
“As a viewing experience derived from a mobile phone it’s kind of unsettling.”
Difference between what you get on iTunes is iTunes stuff is two channel, for N8 it uses multichannel
                                    Huge step up from AAC
“If you had a white board session with a development team to determine what to put in a phone that Apple doesn’t have, you’d end up with the N8…They’ve included some definite iPhone/iPod-type beating technologies in this device. “
On Content, “That’s very much on Nokia’s agenda, but I can’t obviously give any content partners’ names away at this point because the services are not live”. Content, content, content. Users need a resource to obtain them for their Nokia device – something simple, easy to use and easy to pay for. So services coming soon for movie downloads on Nokia?
For full quality movie downloads, Dolby recommends side loading (like iPod, download to PC, loading to iPod) though I can’t see why the phone couldn’t download direct if both sources are downloading over WiFi (aside from battery drain).

On the CPU: the ARM 11 core is underclocked to 680MHz. The default is apparently 750MHz which could be safely overclocked to 850MHz. Now we could argue that for S^3, CPU numbers isn’t all that important (and less so, comparison of CPU hardware with other devices on other platforms as Symbian is extremely optimized to run on less demanding hardware – hence democratization of the smartphone with MeeGo to push the hardware hungry devices.).

On the GPU: it’s suspected that the N8 has a class leading Broadcom BCM2727 GPU, which at the time was shown to pull in more triangles than any other competing phone. This is important for Symbian^3 as it is a GPU accelerated UI, relying more on the GPU than the CPU.

RAM: 256MB. For multitasking, will this be enough? The N900 is a multitasking beast and that has “only” 256MB (though there is +768MB virtual RAM and is on Maemo). Some could argue again that Symbian is more flexible in coping on less RAM. Very early videos has shown the N8 running 15 apps simultaneously with no speed decrease. But what happens when more RAM hungry apps come out?
