papanoel, 12 Jul 2011SO none of you geeks out there know what the differance is ... more@papanoel.

I seem to have missed your original question but I will list the differences as best as I can for you.

Symbian is an old and well established OS which comes in three distinct flavours. Symbian 1, 2 and 3. As this is the N8 discussion board we will talk about Symbian^3.
Android OS is a relatively new OS that was first released on 23 September 2008 ( although there was a beta release on the 5 November 2007 ).

There really aren't that many differences between the two other than the GUI's and a few other insignificant differences within the settings. It's worth mentioning that different manufacturers, such as HTC and Samsung also have differing GUI's which allows one phone to perform a certain function that the other phone might not be able to, like Internet Pass through which is a feature of some HTC phones that allows the user to connect the phone to a PC and use the PC's internet connection to browse the web. As far as I know, no other manufacturer has bothered with putting that functionality onto their handsets.
One major difference between Symbian^3 and Android is the availability of " apps ". A lot more for Android and very few for Symbian by comparison.
There is soon to be a major update to Symbian^3 in the shape of " Anna " which will add new functionalities as well as improve speed and performance. There is a further rumoured update called " Belle " which will radically alter the GUI to resemble that of Android. Not too sure I'm happy about that!.
As for Android updates, it is currently on version 2.3.4 Gingerbread and a promised further update to Ice cream sandwich which will be a " one size fits all " OS to bridge the gap between Gingerbread and Honeycomb ( for tablets ).
One big important difference is security. Android is subject to attack from viruses and other nasty malware, whereas Symbian is not. There are no known threats to Symbian OS.

                    All the best.

                    Ray

Symbian packages are totally incompatible with Android.
Symbian is a closed software system. You have no access to the OS. No customization etc.

Android is opensource. Since you could get the SDK, you can develop for, and customize the OS as you wish.

however, Android is subject to trojans as well as viruses whereas Symbian not.
if there is an error in your Androide coding the SDK, you may get stuck....symbian might be customisable to a certain point.
Symbian is know for its performance in terms of both hardware and software management (i.e there is no need for like 1gb of ram to run symbian fluidly....
Symbian offers much more battry life than android
                      cheers

Make sure you have the phone set to the correct TV-out format for your country, either NTSC or PAL. Goto settings > Accessories > TV-out and adjust as necessary.

Agustin, 12 Jul 2011Does anyone know how to turn the volume off when taking pictures?@Agustin.

If the option to disable shutter sound is missing from Camera > Options > Settings then it means that setting isn't allowed in your country for legal reasons. You can get around it by installing Camerapro from the Ovi store.
