I’ve just got my N9 imported to me. I have upgraded from the N900. Just thought I'd post my thoughts and opinions from the perspective of someone who has upgraded from an N900. Hope there's someone who finds it useful.
My N900 has served me well and stood the test of time very well. I still think that Maemo is one of the best OS around and Nokia should have developed it instead of wasting 2 years with Nokia and Co. Meego Harmatton was a little rushed towards the end and it's a little worrying that Nokia may not be giving it much support anymore so how the N9 looks now may be what we're stuck with. This was the same case with the N900 (with the exception of 2 small updates) but it didn't matter with the N900 because there were enough good apps integrated and enough 3rd party apps to have the device doing everything I needed. So the main thing for me is whether the N9 is going to stand the test of time and do everything I need with a few 3rd party apps. Here are my thoughts:
The hardware:
Always thought the N900 was bulky but forgave it for the physical keyboard and the fact it fitted my pocket well. The N9 is the perfect size to slip into your pocket easily yet has a much clearer and bigger screen. The screen’s resolution is much better than the E7 I used recently and it’s noticeable straight away. In an ideal world I’d have preferred the N950 for the physical keyboard but the N9 is still a very attractive phone. I don’t care about having an hdmi socket like the N8 and I can live without the Fm transmitter. Shame it hasn’t got an SD slot though but again, I can live without it.
The User Interface:
I always thought that the reviews of the N900 were unfair. They always stated that the UI was very customisable but difficult to use and would only appeal to geeks. I always thought this was complete rubbish. It was easy to use compared to Android and more intuitive. The N9 is less customisable than the N900 but still intuitive. There's no disappointment here but Nokia should have added folders to the launcher home screen. I can understand that they didn't want apps in folders by default but the option to add folders should be there. The N900 didn't have folders either but your main apps could be added to a separate home page so it didn't matter so much. Overall though, a big thumbs up.
Integrated services:
Always one of the biggest selling points of the N900. The way Skype, Facebook, email, Twitter, etc. was integrated was brilliant. On the N9 these services are integrated even better. It's all there under contacts and the events home screen. Skype video calls are missing at this point (unlike the N900) but I can live without that. Another thing I've discovered is you can choose whether RSS feeds are displayed on the events page. Notifications are shown first on the events page and they vanish when you've read them. With Facebook the instant messages show as a notifications and your friend's status' show like a feed. All feeds are mixed in chronological order but you can delete a particular feed easily. Very, very good.
The Camera
I’m not a big camera user but I can see that this camera is better than the N900 (which was already perfectly good enough). I don’t care about there being no physical camera button and I’m happy with the touch-focus. Sorry I haven’t got much more to say, it’s more than good enough for my holiday snaps.
The web browser
One of the things I use the most on a handheld device is the web browser. The N900’s browser was brilliant for it’s age. When it first came out it was the best web browser you could have in your pocket. The N900 browser was also smooth when scrolling around yet parts of the page would be missing sometimes and you’d have to wait for a second. The Symbian browser was just awful lag for 20 seconds or more when the page had loaded. The N9 browser is more like the N900 but even faster and practically no waiting. That’s the plus side, however it’s very very basic. This is one of the areas where we need Nokia to stay on board for a bit longer and give us some more features. It’s great to use but lacking of features like “find in page”, favourites and the ability to show flash content. As an alternative to favourites you can add a web page to the apps launcher home page but if you remember there’s no folders so it can get lost in there. I’ve put a few at the bottom of the home page. Apparently the media player should be able to play FLV video files but the ones that I’ve tried don’t work. I’ll just have to live without flash content in web pages. I’ve also noticed that the browser won’t work with FTP servers (unlike the N900) and there’s no decent FTP client app out there yet. I’m sure there will be in the future (Maemo had one). I’ve managed to install a firefox browser but it runs nearly as badly as it did on the N900. Apparently there’s a working Opera Mobile browser out there as well but it’s not a simple install and I haven’t had time to try it yet. BTW. One other issue I found with the browser is I can't scroll up and down within form text areas, a pain if you need to read back on what you've written
Apps
The integrated maps app includes turn by turn navigation with voice (like with Symbian 3) so I won’t need a 3rd party app for this. I’d really like a VNC viewer app but I can’t find one yet. I used to use Joikuspot a lot on my N900 but WIFI tethering is now integrated so I don’t need that. There’s a surprising number of apps in the ovi store but I’m still waiting in anticipation to add application repositories like I had on the N900. Apparently it’s coming and if it’s anything like the N900 it makes it breeze to find and install new apps. Like I’ve already said, I’ll be 100% happy with this device once I have Opera Mobile, a VNC viewer and an FTP client installed. I’d be 120% happy if Nokia could update it to have folders on the home screen and favourites and flash in the browser. I’d be 130% happy with Alien Dalvik installed but it’s not looking good. Am I glad I bought it instead of a Samsung Galaxy S2? ......Yes. But somehow I don’t know why. I think it’s probably due to how sexy it is. I loved the live views and multi-tasking of the N900 and its legacy lives on.

Well, after nokia's release of Lumia Windows phone, might I get more interested in Windows phone. However I still wanted this phone to land in India officially from Nokia. N9 is still only front button-less phone. Is it necessary for nokia to have those windows buttons on Lumia. Window Phone people should throw Windows icon ( 4 tilted sqaures) which looks very sick as people are seeing it every day when there system boots. Windows phone should create a separate brand logo and icons and use it on phone. Button-less phone is good idea. As well nokia should support N9 along with Windows. There is no need to throw away Meego just becoz you have got Windows Phone OS. Nokia can always keep its variety of products ( for which nokia is known for..) going to some extend and see how windows phone is received in market. If windows phone is same magic as old nokia products, they can discontinue Meego. Apart from it, nokia should be quick to launch all the products in every market same time. Nokia gears ( like 360 speaker system) is also not available in India ( Atleast i cant find any online vendor selling it). Nokia can loose if they are too late. India is still market where blackberry and apple has not able to move a single stone. Forget sweeping market like Nokia did once.
