The developers that choose to develop freely or not are supported all the way by nokia unlike apple where your apps only get published under strict rules and don't get any promotion unless they're form some "big" company:

I still wonder why apple pays it's employees back in china with 100$ /week while they invest 500 milion $ in advertising!? - shouldn't a device that good speak for itself?
As for maemo, maemo isn't "based" on linux, it is linux aka a mini desktop in your hand:

And apple is making money off of developers
Nokia is trying to help developers and the moneyis basically telling the developers you did a good job for hard work
Same with the android apps not all of them are free nub

Well its released officially in UAE for Aed 4000 i.e. for $1090 US Dollars, I think the first country to release this device on the planet!!! Lol!!!

Google control: NO THANKS!
Mono speakers: I prefer the N900's stereo speakers to be honest...
No digital compass/FM transmitter: Motorola being cheap? I though so...
Underclocked CPU: Too weak battery!?

Oooopsss! i forgot to mention about its Office capabilty,
Yes, you can edit word files and also excel, PDF viewer, Im not sure for PDF editor. however you would need to pay extra for the activation of this applications.
Like what i've said a while ago, I'll be giving updates when i started to take a look for it's smartfone function.
Hope they would give me this device, now im craving for it. waaaah!!!!

hello there, im back..
i had a chance to play the n900 protophone yesterday.
for your concern:
MMS= yes confirmed, there is no MMS feature with this fone, however, when maemo 6 will be released for the firmware update, MMS will be included.
Radio= no fm reciever. just internet radio
handwriting recognition= no handwriting reconition, there is this preinstalled application inside that serves as a paint aplication, but i think, you cant use it on purpose. you can just draw and play with the stylus.
Digital compass= for ovi maps, there is, but needs to calibrate everytime you use it.
Video call= as of the moment, video calling is still under development, but yes it has a vga secondary cameray in front intented for video call, i didnt check if you can shoot still images with this camera.
new features= i forgot the name of the application, but it has a somekind of command prompt inside.
I think this device is intented for massive internet usage with its java flash player 7. you can browse any site you want. watching streamed videos is so fast.
the display is somekind of hd. i felt like i was watching to a real hd tv. i think its the nano hd display that helps.
the gallery is way better than symbian touch phones. it has some kind of wierd mini viewer for opened application while working on your pictures.
for messaging= email, and conversations which include IM and SMS. unfortunately, I can find anything more like SMS, Voice message or other features you can find to a symbian phone
camera, for the quality of pictures taken from this device, i can say that it produces fair photo quality by just checking at the screen. though this phone is not intented as camera phone.
the good news, it has a better speaker. not that loud enough, but the sound quality is excellent.
it also have a tv-out capability.
usb charging.
there's more i can tell you about n900 when i will play for its smart phone capability.
N900 is not yet fully loaded that's why there is no exact date of its release, but theres more to come with this maemo unit.
Maemo 6 is soon to come to make this device superb. we'll wait for that.

Nokia is still working on maemo 5/6
Mms will be added
The phone is not out
They are delaying it so they can add to the software and hardware
They are not stupid like apple not adding mms for 3.5 years
Remeber the reviews on this tablet are only from prototypes
So relax and talk after it's done
