Anonymous, 25 Oct 2009No dear, webkit id open source, apple just uses it like any... moreThat's a giant load of bullshit. Do you even know what UNIX is?
UNIX is a SHELL. Not an OS.
          OS X runs on UNIX.
It's not copying it or w.e.
MS BOUGHT DOS- still the foundations of some of the features in the Vista OS- for $50,000.
So don't go on spreading crap about Apple when they're both not innovative- just manipulative.
Also, it was only in the OS X series where the Macintosh operating systems even used UNIX.
Before then they used their own shell.
So please, just shut up rather than trying to make one-sided posts which actually have nothing to do with the subject in hand.
It's debatable whether or not Symbian is a better OS than Maemo, but most who actually know what Maemo is and have had experience with it will agree that it is by far superior to any other mobile OS on the market and comparable to a desktop OS.
          EMZ.

Anonymous, 25 Oct 2009...but not java??? Most of the apps that contain java code don't need neither the VM nor the libraries, but there are some cute applets loved by hackers so I think someone might port it.

What puts N900 above other smartphones or even beyond the class of smartphones:

Anonymous, 25 Oct 2009Nokia has been using WebKit in their S60 browser for severa... moreNo dear, webkit id open source, apple just uses it like anyone else on the MACs because they do not have a real browser. If apple has contributed anything, it's because the license forces them to.

And for psion, psion became symbian, it's THAT easy.
As for N900 it's pointless to make a new OS when there already are so many out there.

The lamer here is apple wich aalways wanted to compete with microsoft without having an OS.
When both companies started, that's when operating systems were made, only apple was never able to make one of their own.

MACos is more UNIX than "based on unix" hence it's lameness.

See Apple contributes openly without suing people.

Unlike nokia who think they invented cellphones and wifi so sue people for making a phone.

They also took Psions work and built on it, what are they going to sue Symbian users, now they are taking from the Linux community, I hope they end up like SCO.

They were the first to use it, but it wasn't only their work.

"The code that would become Webkit began in 1998 as the KDE project’s HTML layout engine KHTML and KDE's JavaScript engine (KJS). The name and project 'WebKit' were created in 2002 when Apple Inc. created a fork of KHTML and KJS. Apple developers explained in an e-mail to KDE developers that these engines allowed easier development than other technologies by virtue of being small (less than 140,000 lines of code), cleanly designed and standards compliant. KHTML and KJS were ported to Mac OS X with the help of an adapter library and renamed WebCore and JavaScriptCore. JavaScriptCore was announced in an e-mail to a KDE mailing list in June 2002, alongside the first release of Apple's changes. WebCore was announced at the Macworld Expo in January 2003 by Apple CEO Steve Jobs with the release of the Safari web browser. JavaScriptCore was first included with Mac OS X v10.2 as a private framework which Apple used within their Sherlock application, while WebCore debuted with the first beta of Safari. Mac OS X v10.3 was the first major release of Apple's operating system to bundle WebKit, although it had already been bundled with a minor release of 10.2."
