                Display
The Moto G’s touchscreen is one of the most impressive aspects of the device. It’s a 4.5-inch IPS LCD with excellent brightness, colour and contrast. At this scale the 720p resolution clocks up a pixel density of 326 pixels-per-inch (ppi), which is plenty sharp enough and ensures browsing, gaming and films all look great.

Nokia’s also opted for an IPS LCD, this one is a 4-inch setup with a slightly lower resolution at 800x480 pixels and 233ppi. This screen is decent and offers nice robust colour with reasonable clarity, but it’s not quite as peppy as Motorla’s offering.

                Processor
Inside the Moto G is a quad-core qualcomm Snapdragon 400 (ARM Cortex-A7) clocked at 1.2GHz and carrying 1GB of RAM. Paired with a stock build of Android 4.4 KitKat. Things run incredibly smoothly, and the Moto G is even capable of handling more graphically intensive games – not quite as fluidly as more premium counterparts, but still very good nonetheless.

The Nokia X has a slightly older chip with a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Play dual-core processor clocked at 1GHz and using older Cortex-A5 architecture. It also only has 512MB of RAM. While Nokia’s a dab-hand at optimisation, meaning this setup works reasonably well with the custom-built Android 4.1 Jelly Bean software onboard, this hardware is nowhere near as competitive as its rival, meaning some flashier app and game content could be out of reach.

                Storage, Battery and Connectivity
With the Moto G you have a couple of storage options, either 8GB or 16GB, although the phone lacks microSD support. The Nokia X has far less onboard at only 4GB but it does support cards up to 32GB. Of course, neither phone is 4G capable but you do get Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, microUSB and GPS.

The Moto G packs a 2,070mAh cell while the Nokia X is rated at 1,500mAh.

                Software
Both handsets run Android in one way or another. With the Moto G, you get a uber cheap handset running the latest build of Android – imagine that happening 18 months ago. This means it has all the latest tweaks and features, including transparent UI elements and plenty of optimisations to ensure everything works smoothly – this is Android as it should be.

Nokia uses a “forked” version of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean using Nokia/Microsoft’s own custom interface and suite of applications. As a result, it doesn’t look or operate much like Android at all; in fact even the homescreen and app drawer navigation mimics Windows Phone with a vertical scrolling tile interface and a right-to-left swipe to bring up a list of apps.

Because the build is based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), which in its native state is a very bare bones Android build, the Nokia X doesn’t come with Google’s usual Android app suite onboard (things like Gmail, Hangouts, Google Maps and so on).

Instead, it uses Android versions of Microsoft’s OneDrive (formerly SkyDrive), Skype and Outlook, and Nokia’s mapping service – Here Maps. Facebook and the Opera browser come pre-installed and the handset has access to Nokia’s own app store, but you can sideload Google Play and go scouring for Android apps. Just don’t expect a lot of the high-end content to run smoothly. In this regard it’s probably best to think of the Nokia X’s software as Android Lite, which is probably also exactly how Microsoft wants it.
