Nokia X3 review: Music X-three-M

Music X-three-M

Organizer is great

The organizer of the Nokia X3 is very elaborate, offering a large number of time management applications with nice features and a user-friendly interface. The calendar offers month, week, and day modes and five types of events can be set up.

The week can start on Monday, Sunday, or Saturday. The event types are: reminder, meeting, call, birthday, anniversary and memo. Furthermore, each type of event has its own specific fields and some of them even allow an alarm to be set up as a reminder.

Next-in-line is the handy To-Do manager that enables you to rank tasks in three priority levels. Tasks can be assigned alerts, as well as marked off once accomplished. Those can also be easily synchronized with the calendar application.

Text notes are available as well - their length is limited to 3000 characters.

The alarm clock is repeatable: it can be set to go off on any selected days of the week, even when the phone is switched off. You can also customize the snooze time if you wish.

The other available organizing functions include a voice recorder with a 60-minute limit, a stopwatch and a countdown timer.

Finally, the Nokia X3 calculator offers two versions - basic and advanced. In addition, a loan calculator is also there .

A lot of applications, if only they all worked

The consistently useful unit converter is first in the list of additional applications. It offers all kinds of converting options and, if provided with enough information about the rates, offers currency conversion too. There's an additional converter that gives you clothing and shoe size equivalents worldwide.

The Search application offers Google Search by default, though other search engines might be available depending on your country and region. Submitting a query launches the web browser, which makes this app somewhat useless. Or rather, it would have been if the browser had this functionality built-in.

Windows Messenger is included for your IM needs. If you don't like it you can always download something else from the Ovi Store.

There’s a World clock too for checking the time in any time zone at the cost of only a few clicks.

There's a Flickr app that should allow you to upload your photo's to the popular image sharing site. The problem is, it doesn’t work – it seems that the app is out of date and there was no option to update it. The Flickr website reported an error saying the problem was in the third party app (that would be the preinstalled Flickr application).

Finally, there is Opera Mini (which we already covered), as well as Share on Ovi and Ovi Contacts.

Ovi Store

The Ovi Store on S40 works much like on S60 smartphones. Browsing the Ovi Store, you can choose between several sections - Applications, Games, Audio and Video content, Personalization, Recommended and of course, My Stuff, which shows you the apps you've already installed.

The structure of the Ovi Store client is simple - a list with the name and logo for each app (or podcast, or whatever), the category it's in (Entertainment, Utilities, etc), price and a three star rating.

The Ovi Store has a simple and easy to use structure

Selecting an app, gives you more details - a description, info on size, reviews by people who have tried it, rating (three stars max), the option to write a review yourself or send the description page to a friend, a list of related apps and a Report issue button, which helps you report fraud, spam, abuse, etc., but not bug reports or feature requests.

Searching the Store is quite easy if the Recommended section and the Related apps list doesn't get you what you're looking for.

Yea me too. It was smooth

I never experienced any "plastic-on-plastic friction" when using the slider on my Nokia X3. That is very weird, actually.
