Nvidia's Shield tablets are starting to receive the Android 7.0 Nougat update

Vlad, 09 February 2017

In the Android tablet world, Nvidia really stands out when it comes to software updates. It's not that the company pushed updates incredibly quick or anything like that. But think about it - the Nvidia Shield tablet from 2014 is now in the process of receiving the update to Android 7.0 Nougat. Again, this launched in the summer of 2014, it's almost three years old, and yet it's still supported. Compare that to any other non-Nexus or Pixel tablet out there.

Of course, the Shield K1 from 2015 is also receiving its taste of Nougat. Nvidia has started the rollout for both of its tablets today, but as usual it may take a few days before all the units in the wild are reached.

The new release comes as version 5.0 (of Nvidia's software), and it brings with it everything that's new in Android 7.0, as well as support for the Nvidia Shield Controller (2017), a new exclusive rewards program for Shield owners, and the December 2016 Android security patch level. This one is already two months behind, so hopefully Nvidia will issue a new update with more recent security fixes soon.

The Xiaomi MiPad is almost identical to the Shield, but it is still lingering around with android 4.4. This however shows, how good the hardware actually is.

Actually this is unprecedented in the Android realm. Nothing that launched on KitKat (not even Google's Nexus) got updated to Nougat! So Kudos to Nvidia! :D

Android can't compete with switch as it has no real AAA games. Nvidia can't force developers to develop more for android. It's up to developers if there is competition or if there is none.
