OnePlus Open survives grueling bend test

The latest phone to be put through the now-traditional durability testing by Zack from YouTube channel JerryRigEverything is the OnePlus Open, OnePlus' first foldable smartphone.

Unsurprisingly, the cover display has glass on top, which, like all glass, scratches at level 6 on the Mohs hardness scale, with deeper grooves at level 7. The inside screen is similar to every other foldable display - it's covered by a plastic protector, which scratches at level 2 and gets deeper grooves at level 3.

The phone's sides are confirmed to be made from aluminum, and it seems to be reasonably dust-proof. The outer display lasts for about 25 seconds in contact with an open flame before the pixels turn white - pretty standard behavior for OLED screens. The inner panel's plastic screen protector gets burnt in about five seconds, however.

Finally, the bend test: the phone survives being bent from either direction when it's folded. Not just that, but it also survives being bent in the wrong direction when it's open. After being subjected to that, it doesn't quite snap back into place as it used to, but remains 100% functional even so.

OnePlus recently hasn't had the best track record with these bend tests, and so it's great to see that what many might consider its most vulnerable device to such testing is actually the most resilient. Sometimes, reality can surprise you and defy your expectations.
