After just 5 months light use ownership sometimes the screen is not responding to the first touch - it tactily vibrates that it has taken the command BUT doesn't bring up the unlock screen.....

Also another REALLY REALLY stupid absolutely ridiculous happening is that : when the screen is "supposedly locked" it isn't fact "completely locked" as the ringing volume can be accidentally turned up or down or completely off & it also is constantly taking screenshots ( with the power button & volume down button.... This is exceptionally annoying as I have to constantly delete the shots....
Crappy onboard ring tones supplied from Oppo.

Don't think I'd buy Oppo again, this is my first Oppo phone.
I like my Huawei phone 10 times better to be honest.
And both phones were of very similar purchase dollar value....
The U.i. on the Huawei was far far superior to the Oppo.
The Oppo has awesome specifications but is let down by the "Chinese side" of "not quite getting it right" or "lack of good plain common logic" - I find this is the case with the Chinese interpretation of certain functionalities......

Only is L.C.D screen = a cheap out in build quality.....
I bought this phone very very much based on my limited budget in my country.....

This device meets 98% of my interests
1- IPS LCD i like because Amold hurts my eyes
2- back panel plastic i like instead of breakable glass
3- big FHD display comfortable for me
    4- amazing cameras
    5- good enough battery life
    6- stereo sounds
    7- support 5G

And that's all my needs nothing less nothing more.

rafnov, 05 Sep 2024Is it true that screen is so dark?I find that it's pretty dark - it is only an L.C.D screen you must remember & not an L.E.D let alone an AMOLED L.E.D display....

I find it satisfactorily serviceable. i.e., I don't seem to be wanting more/wishing it had more.

It has 120hz refresh rate, which is awesome & I constantly run it at 120hz without much battery drainage it seems....
It has a 5000mAh battery, so reasonably "chunky" capacity & this doesn't seem to make the phone massively thick though.... It's probably 8.0mm ~

Okay, so after 6 months ownership these are my following thoughts so far:

1/ Annoyingly the screen lock doesn't actually lock ALL buttons, - can you believe it....!!!
I accidentally, whilst picking up the phone or handling it to put it in my pocket, manage to take screenshots & this happens way to often..... Just stupid u.i.
This I'd my biggest peeve with the A98 I think...

2/ The U.i. is not great, sometimes the screen is not recognizing finger taps, - again, God damn annoying as shit....

3/ Screen, although not AMOLED seems o.k. , to me at least.... I constantly run it at 120hkz refresh rate tho.
I'm not a person with my phone in my hand all day either though so, my battery lasts quite well actually.

4/ Battery, fast charging ( & I don't use the O.E.M 67W supplied charger - I think it would shorten the battery life in the long term....
But, the battery is 5000mAh so it's not small & I find it goes for at least two days.
Plus it hangs in there even when it's down to 30,20% left, i.e. it doesn't suddenly die.

5/ Good size RAM up 8k ( shared though).

6/ Rear Camera - to me, it seems to take very very good quality photos! Good depth perception & sharpness. Haven't really used the video hardly at all.
Microscope Camera - I had a play with it in Winter looking at Frost/Ice crystals & to be honest, well, it seemed to work A okay actually!! Different feature I never had/experienced before....

7/ Sound: Stereo speakers of pretty decent quality, good volume level availability & good hi range. Nothing in low range but what phone ever has??
Still has a 3.5mm jack of which I regularly use myself...
I hate "in ear buds" as personally, I can't get them to stay in &, personally, they annoy the shitzen outta me!!

8/ Has some Goggle embedded applications of which can not be removed & I wish they were..... (able to be removed ..)

9/ Crappy selection of ring tones "on board".

10/ I can't seem to "individually" customise each applications notication sounds. Of which I really really like to... Means, I can use my ears to define what has just come in to my phone instead of having to activate my screen as the phone is mostly in my pocket.

Personally I found Huawei to be much much better in their U.i. - their U.i. was exceptionally intuitive, I found....but that was on a P8.... So an older model, granted.

I guess it's okay, depends on purchase price like most things a.....

It has upgraded from Android 13 to 14 & the opp. 24 has made some features better.

I do like that the battery can last forever - if you so need it too, i.e. you deliberately need to preserve it & try to do so...
Android 14 has brought the 80% max charge feature onboard. It also has an O.E.M Battery health monitor & preserver onboard too.

I find the Snap dragon seems to perform okay, albeit an older chipset....

To sum up, a good average phone with pretty decent performance - probably "well good enough" for a lot of people.

Doesn't feel "massive" in the hand - as some phones can in that they "take up a lot of real estate "....

About a € 230-250 level price is probably fair price point.

Seems to have good 5g performance in my country.
        (N.Z.)
Excellent call clarity - 5g probably helps out there a lot too though....
I was going to buy the A58 BUT got a really good deal on the A98. Like $50 dear in my country.

babak, 15 Feb 2024does it have hybrid or dedication slot for micro sd?Hybrid.

rafnov, 05 Sep 2024Is it true that screen is so dark?I doubt that its dark per se, just not that bright enough in direct sunlight that is. That amount of brightness is serviceable for everyday use.

A Redmi Note 13 Pro 5G costs almost 10% less despite being around half a year old in said country, but preferences exist anyway so why would I bother.

This is a great midrange phone for my needs as it meets the following requirements:

                          - At least 8GB RAM & 256GB internal storage
                          - Qualcomm Snapdragon processor
                          - MicroSD card slot up to 512GB / 1TB
                          - 3.5mm headphone jack
                          - Dual/stereo speakers
                          - Must support 5G
                          - At least a 4500mAh or 5000mAh battery
                          - At Least 90Hz or 120Hz refresh rate
                          - Upgradeable to at least Android 12 or Android 13, with the possibility of upgrading to Android 14 or 15

I researched on GSMArena and found that fewer than 30 phones meet these requirements, with most either exceeding my budget or unavailable in the Philippines, such as the Sony Xperia.

I bought it used on Facebook Marketplace from a reputable seller for 9,000 PHP. It's still performing well and has already been updated to Android 14. Based on typical Android support of two major updates, it will be supported until Android 15.

With 8GB of RAM, I can multitask and keep multiple apps open simultaneously without experiencing any lag while playing games. The 256GB of storage allows me to install numerous apps and games with plenty of room to spare. The 120Hz refresh rate ensures fast and responsive performance.

The chipset is also decent for gaming. I can play Mobile Legends on Ultra Settings, Farlight 84 on High Settings, PUBG on Medium Settings, and games like CODM, Warzone, Wuthering Waves, Genshin Impact, and Honkai Star Rail on Medium Settings (It can go high though high settings are not advisable for extended periods without a cooler).

For storage, I keep my files, documents, pictures, photos, songs, music, eBooks, movies, videos, game backups, and ROMs on the SD card. Even if I format the phone, the SD card remains unaffected, allowing me to easily transfer files to a new phone or copy files to a PC using a card reader. The SD card is essential for me.

It also features a 3.5mm jack, allowing me to use my wired earphones or connect the phone to a laptop or speaker to listen to and play music stored on the device. Like the SD card, this feature is indispensable to me. The sound quality is satisfactory, allowing me to enjoy music without needing to connect to a Bluetooth speaker in my room.

In the Philippines, 5G coverage is expanding, making it advantageous to have a phone that supports 5G as we transition to this technology, with 6G possibly being released in a few years.

The 5000mAh battery lasts a long time and doesn't overheat easily, based on my experience. It can go for extended periods without needing to be charged and charges quickly with the appropriate cable and charger.

The camera is good; I take pictures whenever I go out or travel, and they turn out well, which I sometimes post on social media.

Overall, this phone is perfect for my needs, and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. It represents a significant upgrade from my old phone, the Oppo A9 2020. If you have similar requirements for a phone like mine, this model will also be ideal for you. Although it's no longer available in official stores, you can find many sellers on secondhand markets.
