Oppo Reno12 Pro review
Flagship-worthy 6.7-inch OLED
The Reno12 Pro features a nice 6.7-inch OLED panel with 120Hz refresh rate along with HDR10+ support. The resolution is standard - 1080 x 2412px and the color depth is 10-bit. The display seemingly has all the bells and whistles one would expect from 2024 hardware.
In our brightness tests, the device achieved 538 nits in manual mode and 1,380 nits in auto mode. An excellent result, which ensures excellent legibility outside on a bright sunny day.
Keep in mind that we experienced issues with the brightness boost. The display often refused to boost above 1,000 nits and we narrowed it down to the ambient light sensor. We had trouble making the display boost its brightness even outside in the sun..
Refresh rate
The refresh rate, unfortunately, is a mess. In automatic mode, the software will keep 120Hz even if you are not interacting with the screen but will lower it to 60Hz in Google Chrome, for example. It doesn't go down in YouTube either.
Forcing the display at 120Hz will boost the refresh rate in Chrome only to 90Hz. In short, the system will keep the 120Hz refresh rate when it's not needed and will dial down to 60 or 90Hz when you actually need it to be higher. Go figure.
Battery life
The Reno12 Pro runs on a 5,000 mAh battery and, as per the marketing materials, specially optimized Dimensity 7300 SoC, hence why it's called Dimensity 7300-Energy.
We were skeptical about that last part, but the Reno12 Pro boasts excellent battery life, beating pretty much all of its competitors and matching the OnePlus 12R's battery life. This leads us to believe that the software has the bigger say here, given that the two devices run on essentially the same software.
Either way, the Reno12 Pro's great 14:54 h Active Use Score is achieved by excelling in all individual tests. The 4G talk time and gaming runtime are pretty good, but the web browsing and video playback tests stand out the most.
Charging speed
The Reno12 Pro ships without a charger in markets outside of India, which is a rather big misstep given that it supports a proprietary 80W SuperVOOC fast charging standard. So you can't get the best out of the handset unless you buy this one specific charger from Oppo.
There are unexpectedly good news, though. We tested the device using 80W SuperVOOC and 100W Power Delivery chargers, since the device is advertised to support PD 2.0 (9V, 1.5A). And it turns out, there's not much of a difference.
In fact, charging using a PD 2.0-compliant charger is 2 percentage points faster at the 15 and 30-minute marks, compared to the 80W charger. However, the latter is faster at the finish line, completing a full cycle within 46 minutes (as advertised) and 53 minutes using a Power Delivery charger.
Speakers
The Reno12 Pro has a standard set of speakers in a hybrid configuration, meaning the secondary speaker doubles as an earpiece, while the bottom one is a full-fledged speaker. Nonetheless, the sound was somewhat balanced. The bottom-firing speaker is a bit louder, but it's not as noticeable as one would expect.
Loudness stands at "Very Good" -24.0 LUFS, but the sound quality is far from good. There's a noticeable distortion and ringing at higher volume levels. The highs and mids sound way too distorted for our taste, while the bass is barely noticeable.
Use the Playback controls to listen to the phone sample recordings (best use headphones). We measure the average loudness of the speakers in LUFS. A lower absolute value means a louder sound. A look at the frequency response chart will tell you how far off the ideal "0db" flat line is the reproduction of the bass, treble, and mid frequencies. You can add more phones to compare how they differ. The scores and ratings are not comparable with our older loudspeaker test. Learn more about how we test here.

So what? This is why Samsung phones are more expensive than OPPO phones. As long as it's not broken and the key Android features are there, updates aren't necessary
