I recently noticed that the camera is not actually 8MP but 5MP (my new phone shows the resolution of images in the gallery app). False advertising! That explains why the images were so bad.

I'm the same person who posted the comment above. I think this was too charitable of an interpretation - the camera app has an optional watermark (disabled by default) that says "AI Quad Camera", so I think it's at least somewhat ...
