LG Nexus 5 review: Back to the future

13 November 2013
Nexus phone releases are timed to let Google have the last word – and what a way to have it! A phone that matches any flagship on specs and premieres the latest OS version, but costs barely half as much as some of them. The Nexus 5 promises a....

I had this Phone for 3 days previously I had a HTC One Mini. Whilst it is a very fast phone, it does have in my opinion some shortcomings. The camera is average at least. You have to be very steady taking a picture. Battery life is very poor - Im not a heavy user but I was getting just over 24 hours from the battery. Audio is poor to - very hard to hear notifcation alerts. The screen picks up finger prints too unlike my HTC

As for Kit Kat Im not mad about Hangouts. I dont want to use Googles integrated services - all I want is basic SMS. In fact in downloaded 8sms from the play store to get over this irritation. You cant arrange the apps or create folders. I like my screens to be neat and tidy. you can only create folders on your home screens. Also I dont understand why if you want to pick a custom ringtone it has to be in the ringtones folder. Previous to kit kat all you had to do was press on the file and select on the option Use as ringtone.

google seem intent on pushing users towards using their services. the whole reason I like Android is the flexibility and freedom it gives. Unlike IOS and Windows which are tighly integrated into their own services. I just hope future verions of Andriod dont go down this road

"But see how these are all issues of the hardware?"

Hardware is the most important thing in a smartphone, software can always be tweaked.

Build quality, battery capacity, size, weight, processor, screen size, screen quality, ppi, RAM, sound quality, removable battery, camera... these are all important hardware specs.

Important non-hardware specs? UI and price, that's about it.

The S4 and G2 both have Audience's noise cancellation chip, which is by far best in class noise cancellation. The N5 and HTC One both use Qualcomm's vastly inferior Fluence noise cancellation. I don't know what's in the Xperia and Moto X, but it's not Audience and also inferior.

I don't know why reviews ignore serious testing of call quality, beyond passing subjective remarks, but almost all do. In any case, this is one way the N5 falls short.

Ironically, the Nexus One was one of the very first devices to use the Audience chip and get attention for it. No subsequent Nexus device has had the Audience chip. This has been a big step backwards in call quality every since.

The battery isn't nearly as bad once you turn off some of the over abundant battery draining options.

                Great review as always.

I've been using mine for about a fortnight, bought it when nothing more interesting (qwerty slider etc) was forthcoming.

Its extremely good value and i'd recommend it despite the battery life. This review nails it in terms of + and - points. But the price point can't be argued with.

1.Looking at the CPU performance wondering, if they had really used Snapdragon 800 or just overclocked version of Snapdragon 600?

2.Battery disappointment was expected, due to low capacity battery, however surprised to see that camera performance is also average.

3.Also why Google went with LG in first place, even if they has Motorola in-house option?

4.Sorry Google will buy Nokia Lumia 1520, which will available after 25-Nov-13 worldwide.

Can' decide between LG G2's speed, camera, screen size bur plastic feel VS HTC Ones,s good speakers, alum. Body and htc sence but not so good camera and slower processor.

iPhone 5S is better in most of the bench, arks,it has Touch ID,it's better in battery life test and it has better sunlight contrast ratio than LG Nexus 5 but unfortunately it's a lot more expensive than Nexus 5.

A camera deemed okay by Gsmarena is good enough for me but that endurance rating is just horrible :( Will probably have to install a custom kernel and underclock/undervolt the phone the day I get it. People on xda report better battery life if you just mess around a little.

The web browsing battery life..... Wowww that's so bad. But not surprised, nexus 4 was very terrible also.

Well done Google, an ugly phone with low storage and no battery life, and again a subpar camera, makes the ois seem like a waste.

It's cheap and it shows, not worth it.
