Sony Xperia Z1 Compact review: Mini gone big

28 January 2014
Sony is the first to deliver a smartphone, which wouldn’t let size get in the way of performance or screen quality. It’s no accident that it’s called the Compact version of Xperia Z1 rather than a mini...

I doubt you can make a phone full IP-compliant water/dustproof AND have conductive charging.
But perhaps Harry potter works at Sony? :)

This one is a downscaled 8MP photo with HDR and should look better (especially since it also uses HDR). It looks aweful!

I agree that the one below looks much better:
    http://cdn.gsmarena.com/vv/reviewsimg/sony-xperia-z1-compact/review/camera/gsmarena_011.jpg

But there's another on using manual settings that looks goddamn awful.

    http://cdn.gsmarena.com/vv/reviewsimg/sony-xperia-z1-compact/review/camera/gsmarena_001.jpg

View the pics 1:1 and just see the horrific jaggies at the fences, the artifacts at the yellow concrete etc... If THAT is the best there is on Android then the Z1 compact is VERY disappointing.

As for the "40 vs 20mpx" this is bullshit. Nokia 808PV downsamples photos to 8MP or 5MP. You rarely shoot at the full resolution. The Z1c also downsamples photos when HDR is applied so it SHOULD be a LOT better then the full 20Mp resolution pics, yet it isn't! It's the same!

This camera is a disgrace for a company that claims to be a pioneer in imaging.

Again I ask WHY can't manufacturers work together and buy stuff from each other to create the ultimate smartphone. They ALWAYS try to re-invent the wheel again and I'm personally SICK of it!

Sony must STOP compromising their devices or go bust!

Because of these bad cameras I'm NOT interested in this Z1-series anymore. And then they're still using that supposedly tempered glass and glue a ridiculous plastic cover on it. Use proper Gorilla glass and NOT that crap!

"And what happened when PurView had a 20mp"
You are refering to these bloody Lumia's. They are NOT real pureview. True Nokia aficionados call them FakeView. Because they use the same crappy BSI sensors like everyone else (Sony) with too yellow colour cast and ugly artifacts. Not to mention that 1020 has a ridiculous long shot-to-shot time. Why anyone call that monstrosity a smartphone is beyond my comprehension!

Does the z1 compact have qi capabilities out of the box or do you have to buy add ons as with the Samsung s4?

You complain about it not being that good when it's about the second best there is on Android. Best there is on any modern flagship. As far as taking daylight pictures goes. And you compare it to an old Acer camera that is light years behind!???? Seriously???

Best yet. Do you realize what a horribly analogy you made? You are comparing them to Nokia PurView with 40MP to say all these others are not good enough....But these are HALF the resolution. Pixels don't mean everything...but they are half the battle, help a lot, and sure mean something. Especially 20 compared to 40mp....And what happened when PurView had a 20mp? It is beaten by 13mp in scenarios and overall resolving of detail. So there is a 99% chance this sensor stands up EXTREMELY well to 40mp PurView, but only has half the pixels to work with. Because it sure takes nice shots compared to the 20MP PurView 1520.

However we can agree Sony's software needs work in other areas and is less consistent. It's weird how some of their cameras work much better in burst mode. Where as even Samsung can finely tune the software of Sony's sensors to make far superior use of the sensor. In the end they still did great with this one and the only one possibly better in the Android world would be the Zoom. Which ALSO stacks up extremely well to the 1020 and 8o8, but has less than even half the pixels to work with.

          What a crap camera?!?!?
Is this the best they can do on Android?

The pics look like they're made from a cheap Acer phone from yesteryear. My Acer F1 made as crappy photos as this Z1 compact.

If these manufacturors can't make even decent cameras on their phones then, PLEASE, BUY THEM FROM NOKIA! For god's sake!

Give me a Snapdragon 800 phone with the camera of the Nokia 808PV (NOT the one from the 1020)! I couldn't care less if the device is a bit thicker. I don't need a 60"screen with 4000x2500 pixels. A 4,5 screen with 720p is all I need.

have these companies such big egos that can't accept defeat and just obtain better camera-modules from somewhere else (their competitors perhaps)? The same with the Sony's screens and used Glass. If this is the same crap with that ridiculous plastic layer of the Z1 then I don't want it. Just use that goddamn Gorilla Glass if it is better and stay away from the fake shit!

If only one manufacturer would actually combine ALL the best technology in ONE device... Oh boy.

True gorilla glass, Toshiba sensor from the Nokia 808PV, 4.5 inch screen (colour corrected RGB Amoled) 720P, Proper and LOUD speakers (so that we can actually hear the rings when the phone sits in a bag/coat/trousers/whatever), loud headphone socket (so i can hear my bloody music when I'm at the traffic light at the pedestrian-crossing), Battery that least 2 days AT LEAST and please... Make the damn thing THICK (enough) and sturdy! No skinny anorexic pos that last 2 minutes per charge and slips out of your hand with he least gush of wind!

Then wake me UP! Otherwise I'll just use my goddamn Nokia 808PV for yet another year. Until these smart-asses come to their senses.

I was waiting for this review a lot. Well I still think this will be my next phone. I am only confused by the still camera quality especially when using the compare tool. The iPhone 5s delivers better images. I really think the gsmarena team (as they said) had not the retail version. In fact I expect similar quality to the xperia Z1. Summarizing the hardware is capable to do the work, right now the software not to much. Greetings.

                True...

But the glass adds to the overall aesthetics of the device. Besides, pretty much everybody nowadays uses some kind of case for their mobile for that added protection.

I have an HTC One & the build is superb. I could never go back to a device that uses all plastic...a la...Samsung & LG

The only compliant about this phone is that glass back panel. If it was sturdy aluminium unibody instead, or even plastic cover, it'd be a perfect phone for me. But why glass? Isn't it the most unlikely material to make things that gonna be constantly touched, scratched, dropped and otherwise abused out of? It's already top performing and waterproof, why not make it almost completely abuse-proof, too?

M and M, 31 Jan 2014Exactly; android is very inefficient and unoptimized especi... moreAndroid phones have higher specs that wp for the following reasons.
                        1. Trace back 5 years ago, there were already apps for android that requires high gpu and cpu. While wp don't have that much apps.
                        2. High specs for future adoption on updates, while the not so old Windows7.8 can't run apps that require high specs.

If you notice recently, WP are going for high specs because many apps requires it.
Wp is still in maturing stage.

Let me present you the smallest of all things - widgets. Where are the widgets in WP? Where's my big fat clock on the homescreen and my custom wallpaper on it? Where does my app go after I press the Windows button? It closes - no multitasking. Believe me mister, I've used all of these OSs for quite some time and there's a reason why I favor Android. And now you dare to say that Android consumes more RAM needlessly? There's a reason for everything, sir.

Symbian belle end is a shame, as this Os can handle very high end tech with very little memory and processor. Just because the aspect of the Os and fonctionnality were not good at all. My nokia N8 with 600 mHz processor can take 720p videos at 30 fps, read also this videos, and with a custom rom is very fast on basic usage. A good lesson that should at least inspire the trendy Os

c'mon be fair, android is fragmented as hell, iOS isn't.Of course it will need more memory and better hardware to do the same things as good as iOS.

Also developers get a lot more money developing for iOS, than android. And as you may know, money is the only sole reason a given developer to be coding for given platform.

On the topic, Z1C is the best android device out there, simple fact, that only a braindead person will try to dispute.

Because I am talking about standard app usage here, nothing special.
So that means android phones need especially more expensive hardware because teh system is not optimized, while apple and microsoft are doing such a good job that they need to use half the specs for the same performance. Im not against HAVING more RAM, but definitely against USING more ram and cpu power when you don't need it, and the smartphone you worship is a typical case. So wake me up when you find a real use for that 2.6 GHz quadcore on a 720p display except cutting in half your battery life, this is something you or sony have to prove, not me :P
