Sony Xperia Z1 Compact review: Mini gone big

28 January 2014
Sony is the first to deliver a smartphone, which wouldn’t let size get in the way of performance or screen quality. It’s no accident that it’s called the Compact version of Xperia Z1 rather than a mini...

Anonymous, 29 Jan 2014nokia is not able to make their own camera because the came... moreughhh.. this again.. the components of any phone belongs to the brand/company that owns it.. these companies just OUTSOURCE the manufacturing of these components

think of it like this.. you made a cake recipe for your home business but you dont have a suitable kitchen tools, so you pay your neighbor to make it for you under your name. this neighbor works for you but they have no right to declare that the recipe is of their own

I'd seriously consider ditching my iPhone 5 for one of these. Sony should have a hit on their hands here with the right marketing and support.

Impressive results in all departments, battery is just what i hoped for, but we must keep in mind that webbrowsing scores in gsmarena tests are not realistic as they only reload the same page over and over, in real life you stress the cpu much more with zooming and panning. Whats great about that result though is that you can expect more than 13 hours screen on time for light tasks, also with wifi turned on. Enormous improvement over the Z1 then, obviously this new display tech is much more power efficient. And 0.34 nits on blacks at full brightness beats everything else except AMOLED, impressive, Sony has really made the most perfect phone this time.

Its no secret that Sonys led flashes cant do much at 3 meters, my Z was like that too but in real life usage it didnt bother me as most flash photos was taken at around a meters distance, but sure it would not hurt to have a stronger one.

This phone has everything except a real competitor.

Anonymous, 29 Jan 2014Only it is not as good. Truth to be told, it is a very good... morenokia is not able to make their own camera because the camera sensor in 808/1020 is made by toshiba and the camera sensor in 920/925/928 is made by sony.
the lens is made by zeiss.
and OIS is made by ST.

A much better iPhone alternative, for people who don't want big phones. This pretty sums it up. Congratulations Sony, for Z1 and Z1 Compact. It's about time that phone manufacturers create beautiful phones with excellent build quality, great camera, zippy performance, minimalist UI, and great accessories. Bezels you say? I'd rather have beautiful phones with bezels rather than phones made from frail, semi elastic plastic (with faux leather to boot).

I am waiting for this phone to launch in India eagerly.
I always wanted the phone that is of right size for my hand without compromising the under the hood power. This is perfect for me!!

Does this phone have the same issue of over heating while charging as its bigger sibling; the xperia Z1? or was it xperia Z.

Truly a mini flagship. Only disappointments are low sound quality, camera isn't upto the mark, non removable battery and weak LED flash.

Why a 21 MP camera if the picturequality is good only up to 8 MP? This camera should be just as good as or better than Nokias 20 MP cameras, and even compete with Nokias 41 MP cameras!

Two things kill this stone cold dead:

                                  1. No removable battery. Sony continues the trend of treating customers like idiots and refusing to provide removable batteries. Why Sony, Why????

                                  2. Tiny notification LED that you can barely see. Why bother having an LED if you're going to stick it inside the speaker grill and make it so tiny that it's next to invisible? Notification LED is a vital piece of functionality and Sony should have used the same LED strip like they had on the Xperia SP.

A general note, I'm sick and tired of crap virtual on-screen buttons. Samsung have the right with a big fat home button, it's a shame Sony didn't follow suit and wasted all that space under the screen.

Xperia ZR is still a better proposition as a mini flagship; removable battery, bigger LED strip at the bottom.

Anonymous, 29 Jan 2014Do you have experiences Sir? I compared a real life phot... moreWhy are you comparing different things? You are trying to argue with the person stating about xz1/xz1c and you are using xz, xzr, etc... it doesn't make sense cause even though the devices you mentioned are sony they still use different sensors and it is wrong to generalize them just because they belong to one brand. And I have xperia v by the way and we have IPhone 5 from the office, my phone shoots better pictures than IPhone 5 in most cases.

It is all about priorities, though, couple of years ago I took about 50 pics by mobile on daily basis, these days I prefer connectivity, performance, battery life and storage to built-in camera, which is always sufficient for macros, interesting moments capturing, etc.
