Nokia N72 review: Controversy all around

25 August 2006
Nokia N72 bar-shaped phone is another Nokia smartphone but differs from the latest additions on the shelves of the Nokia smartphones as it runs on Symbian 8.1 OS with 2.8 edition user interface. This transitional system has to offer features from both previous Nokia Symbian smartphones and some of the characteristics of the 3rd edition UI.

I've been using this phone for two weeks. I've recently experienced a problem with the registration of a memory card.

I'm using the Nokia-included 128MB memory card. One day when opening the card slot cover, I peeled the cover back to far and it snapped off, separating itself from the phone chassis. I thought nothing of it and removed the memory card. When I reinserted the the memory card, the phone would not recognize the card (by that I mean, the phone does not detect a memory card at all). I am certain I have inserted the card properly (the card clicks when inserted and seated) and I have not modified the card in any way since removing it from the phone, so I'm fairly certain there is nothing wrong with the card.

With the memory card inserted I then re-seated the broken slot cover back on the phone and it toggled the memory card removal message prompt. So I took a small pair of tweezers and tugged at the elastic band that previously secured the slot cover to the phone (before I broke it off) and found that the elastic band's position communicates to the phone whether a card has been inserted or not (not the actual insertion of the card into the slot). For the mean time I have to push the elastic band upwards (to simulate the slot cover being closed) for the phone to register a memory card has been inserted. I'm gonna try to repair the slot cover door with super glue.

I find this memory card registration design flaw inexcusable. So if a user accidentally breaks off the memory card slot cover (which is not hard to do on a mobile phone), they lose functionality of the memory card slot. While this problem doesn't bother me that much, imagine if this card registration problem existed with your bank's ATM. Instead of the ATM registering you've inserted your ATM/debit card through the actual physical insertion of the card, you had to push or slide some cover shut. And if that cover was broken, the ATM just didn't work or worse, would not spit out your card. Wouldn't you be frustrated?
