HTC One (M8) review: One and only

25 March 2014
To say there are great expectations of the freshly announced HTC One (M8) would be a massive understatement. This is, after all, one the of flagships to shape the entire season. But a predecessor that failed to turn warm reception into good sales...

Do i know their ads with taking photos underwater? Of course i do! And I also know about the complaints people had about the xperia z and their other water resistant advertised phones. I knew my phone could suddenly fail on me. And it sucks that your friends had damaged units. But i did not really care since the xperia Go was a cheap buy for me anyway. It would have been a different story with a flagship though. No way ill intentionally dip that in water.

mir, 28 Mar 2014Well. Not all people want to carry a separate camera around... moreMost people are being fooled by resolution of those smartphone cameras.. if you see how these smartphone companies endorse the capabilities of their smartphone cameras, they are nuts telling people its almost the same as DSLR,your telling accidental dips on water?? maybe your not aware of their commercial showing taking photos underwater right??? and those flaps?? 2 of my friends have problems on that, the other one is bragging these things on me and after a year their phones are useless, the last time we go on a swimming pool party and those water resistant thing fails... sony service center did'nt want to provide free repair & parts replacement because 1 yr warranty already lapses. How much is the cost of repair? its almost 60-70 percent of the phone's prize!!!

AnonD-209094, 28 Mar 2014The bad first, its longer than Xperia Z1, which is already ... morefor u Galaxy S5 is Angelina Joli right????

Actually guys ..the m8 despite being tall is quite comfy to hold...its less broader than m7 and z1 and z2...and so it actually curves naturally and fits perfectly...and the camera is quite good...for normal shots for fb twitter....

AnonD-237024, 28 Mar 20144K isn't everything yk, 1080p is still ok...I'd take a properly stabilized 1080p video over shaky 4K anyday. The M8 does not even have OIS anymore. And it clearly shows in the sample night shots and videos.

AnonD-247759, 28 Mar 2014want good camera shots??? buy DSLR folks.... no smartphones... moreWell. Not all people want to carry a separate camera around. They want it all in one device. And people who prefer taking photos with their phones casually will most likely not need the complexity of a DSLR. The flaps will only last a year? Your underestimating these devices. I've owned an Xperia Go for longer than that and its water resistance has never failed on me. And water resistance on phones is mostly for accidental dips into liquids and not the absurd examples you have just posted.

Im having my contract increased to £20 a month. So I might take the plunge with the M8 because my contract with the Lumia 800 ends Nov. Or maybe the Note 3. GALAXY S5 is a no go; complete joke.

So should I get Note 3 or M8?

want good camera shots??? buy DSLR folks.... no smartphones can beat DSLR even sony z2 20.7MP.. it will eat dust if you compare it to any DSLR today even to an old 10MP entry level DSLR.. HTC just put what is really needed for a smartphone. 4mp camera isnt bad for a regular photo that we usually share on online social networking sites like FB..we usually use filters and that what HTC provides, good filters and not extra pixels that is useless on a regular use basis, the more pixel on your photos the more memory on your storage it will eat.. specially on videos right??? and what the hell are sony and samsung doing on their smartphone flagships with water resistant gimmick thing??? they think most smartphone buyers will stay their whole life underwater??? are they athlete swimmers who will take photos their self after traning?? or maybe their target buyer are fishermen's who stay in the middle of the sea everyday & night and take selfies while catching fish?? or maybe scuba divers who take photos under the sea?? oh I forgot those crap smartphones will only invincible on water penetration on 1 meter depth water for just 30min span of time.. sh*t corals & fishes are located more that 1 meter depth right??how can you take photos using those crap smartphones huh?? and how long those flaps will last?? I mean those things that cover orifices of smartphones??? maybe a year?? useless right? wear & tear concept folks.. the more you remove & put again those flap cover repeatedly.. the shorter the life span it will take... remember everyday you charge your phone 2-3times right?? so clearly the water resistant thing is completely non-sense at all!!!! it a gimmick thing??

most of the people with comments related on htc logo below LCD cammera.. they telling its a waste of a space.. actually if you know the meaning of ergonomic design then u may have a change of mind.. it is more comfortable to to touch those 3 capacitive buttons (back, home , multi-tasking)in a single handed use if they are place higher from the bottom of the phone, its simply because our thumb is normally resting on that area.

U can always find better DAC on U'r range, nor this phone or N91 can beat dedicated DAC device with low price.

I'm always amazed how devices nowdays support for USB DAC; improving the sound thousands times better.

The bad first, its longer than Xperia Z1, which is already disgustingly long, and its thick as well. Not a good start. The display photos look bad, all are on the cold side.

Battery isnt that great either, 9 hours of webbrowsing time is not that impressive this year. Sure it has great standby but who cares, for heavy usage the webbrowsing test is the one that matters. Further i like to know the brightness used for the battery test, how many nits at 50% brightness?

Good things, first the camera that has improved considerably, but 3mp is not much, and 3mp it is, i almost never shoot 16:9. Obviously got a problem here, they should've made it 5mpix 4:3 and retained around 4mpix 16:9. The extra camera is useless for me and i got the impression that this is the reaon why they omitted the OIS this time. So the useful OIS that helped get clear photos at longer exposuers and helped shooting good videos has been kicked out to make space for a useless gimmick. Then all in all the camera also turns out to be a disappointment.

I dont yet have an opinion on the user experience but judging from other Sense phones i assume its horrible, complete with Blinkfeed and other things to annoy people.

man the foreground shot looks like a bad photoshop job with a blur tool. htc needs to update this cause theyre similar on other sites too. the edges are rough and jagged when using the background blur feature
