Samsung Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8): Leather and steel

17 April 2014
HTC has made some of the best-looking smartphones in recent history while Samsung has some of the best-selling ones. That’s very much true for the HTC flagship and yet to be seen about the Samsung Galaxy S5, but the clash is no less...

      Cheap Metal?!!!
Are you a metal dealer or what?! :)
So, that's why Ferrari cars are so CHEAP. Because they are made of aluminum :)
And how about planes which are mostly manufactured by aluminum and 2024 aluminum alloys?! Are Boeing and Airbus ripping off airlines and give them CHEAP stuff?!
Or MAYBE, and just MAYBE, you want them use titanium which USAF uses to build B2 Spirit Bomber?!
      It's your choice Plastic Boy :) ;)

And do you even know what that metal is???
It's ALUMINUM...Which is what I pointed out...And do you know what aluminum is? CHEAP recyclable material. Glass is too. And of course plastic is.

My entire point in my comments is based on facts and that everyone has their preferences. You reply seems fanboy driven and rushed.

Design is preference. HTC's is considered more flashy to most people while Samsung's is more durable, ergonomic, and practical.

[deleted post]S4 didn't win because people like the HTC design better.
The S4 was factual better in terms of display, camera, software, software updates, battery, and ergonomics...Most main key points in other words.

And it's the same thing again. People might think the M8 looks better, but the S5 has better technology. And Poly Carbonate is "out of both being the plastic and metal being cheap recyclable material" is the more durable one. It's also lighter and more malleable. And it's water proof with removable battery.

Plus Samsung's' size, shape, and texture is more ergonomic/comfortable.
In other words...One is made to look nicer and the other is made to work and survive better.

Is metal finish a premium? look like scrap metal to me, the three parts body (metal/glass/metal) looks urgly, poor finishing you can feel the join in between, the feeling is bad when you hold a piece of metal during winter, plastic or glass make you feel warmer.

Dosen't matter what material, the overall design speak for itself

AnonD-212255, 25 Apr 2014You ask "Why is that Samsung made a thinner device out... moreFirst off reading comprehension and reading skills/problems go hand in hand.
You not be able to read what's said and claiming an extremely tiny typo plays more into reading.
                            The rest plays into comprehension.

Next...Because they chose to????? So you are saying HTC has the ability to make the M8 much more compact with a larger battery, and make it removable....But purposefully chose to be lazy and make the device much larger with a smaller non removable battery because they chose to....And that's ok...But Samsung using a more durable and practical and ergonomic approach is not ok because you prefer metal.......Wow......

Where did I say that made them leaders in design? Worse on your logic where is that speaking of the design?? That's the build of the phone. Not design as in the pleasing aesthetic look as you are attempting to imply. which is not what we were talking about for that particular aspect. And if you want to talk like that the Droid Razr blows One out of the water.
And I don't see HTC, Sony, Apple, LG making any major changes to their design. They all stick to their distinguishable look. Which is all preference. Not everyone has to love the look of Galaxy...But only jealous online haters bash on it. And again it's more ergonomic, practical, durable, and the new soft touch feels great. It does look the prettiest, but it works better.
You care more about a status symbol.
I think the M8 looks good. Not my favorite, but it's nice. I really do like the gun metal finish however just because I like gun metal. However I appreciate the slimmer portions, softer touch in hand, and added durability of the S5. One is your preference. The other is mine. Does not make either bad. However what is fact and cannot be changed are the added advantages of the poly carbonate.

It has sd slot because it is not 1.5mm thinner....What on Earth was that supposed to mean? I'm guessing a failed attempt at sarcasm. And it's 1.3mm thicker. Not 1.5mm. It's curved. Good. Because it helps take away from the bulk. It's nice and if you prefer the metal that is YOUR choice. Does not mean you should run around the internet going "well I like metal so metal is better period". And saying plastic is bad.
But again...Among other things..respect and logic seem a bit beyond your reach.

Meanwhile Touchwiz runs nearly the same as the rest of the bunch, but adds way more functions, and options. In fact it's now got an even smaller foot print than some of the other OEM UIs. To say Touchwiz is heavy and laggy compared to other Android's is no different than an apple fanboy saying that Android is heavy and laggy compared to IOS. Tad bit more weight with more functions. Touchwiz offers more. Plain and simple.
And it's basically all optional. You can even turn most things off. You can use as many or as few as YOU chose. That's the point. Choice.
Anyone who has used Touchwiz knows it runs way better than what people online claim. Anyone sitting there calling it laggy and crappy is just an online jealous troller.
And it does not mean that it would...But it still does anyway.

Ok. That's basically what all the flagships do with different features. One's who go for HTC did it for the metal body and speakers. One's that do it for the S5 will do it for water proofing, better camera, and best screen. You are pretty much just arguing that you like metal better so HTC is automatically better. That you want a phone just so you can show off what it looks like.
And it should work for quite a while. The OEMs think of those things. And the cover is very easy and low cost to replace over time.

Ok. That's still the point then. You are complaining hardcore over it when it's a cheap material recyclable material too. But it's the one you like better. And it's how you use it. Correct.
HTC used it to be what most people might think is prettier. Samsung used their to look decent, but went with a more durable and practical route. Having more options, ergonomics, comfort, water proofing, and removable larger battery in good bit slimmer profile.
And so what aluminum costs more than plastic. Point?
Amoled costs much more than LCD. In fact it's probably the most expensive part in ANY of these phones. And it's the world's best right now. The Amoled cost difference is WAY more than just aluminum or plastic.
Don't you also think USB 3.0 costs more? Brand new much larger and better camera tech? Having heart rate sensor and finger print scanner? "you liking them is not the point of how much it costs". How about making sure in material and through extensive testing that a device can hold an IP67 water and dust tight rating???? larger battery? More sensors for more functions? Yet in the end...Despite Samsung overall using many more expensive parts...They cost about the same....So who are the ones being cheap and over charging then?????
Just because they used metal and you like metal better does not mean that HTC used all the most expensive things and everything else did not.

OK? Screen and Camera on S5 blow the HTC out of the water...Damaged too because it's not water proof lol. Now that is how you properly use sarcasm.
And as far as I remember the Z2 has much better speakers than the M8. Point?
And really? That's why the S4 and Note 3 had faster updates? And that's how even the S3 from 2012 is only going to be about a couple months away from the same updates..... Or how Samsung is updating more devices........Yeah...That makes logical sense.

So just because it's adequate means it's ok to offer less and charge the same...Because you like the build material better?

Some people use their photos for facebook, some actually like to take quality photos. Some people like to buy phones for what hey offer, how they hold up, and how they work. Some just like to buy them and show of their cases. Again...That's how you do that properly ;)

I'm talking in circles.....But My replies are only directly addressing what you say. And you are the one repeating things in a stubborn denial....again...Logic, reason, respect, facts, common knowledge, and reading/reading comprehension all seem to just allude you...Kind of sad really. It's like talking to a grumpy wall.

Anonymous, 25 Apr 2014So in response to being completely schooled you try disprov... moreYou ask "Why is that Samsung made a thinner device out of plastic & used a bigger battery"?

LOL...because that is what they chose to do. It in no way implies that they are ahead of the game when it comes to design. If anything, they are still left in a viscous cycle of the same regurgitated designs leftover from 2011-2014.

The HTC ONE M8 has an SD slot. Because it isn't 1.5mm thinner than the Galaxy, HTC doesn't have the technology to make it thinner? The M8 is actually a curved design that cradles the users hand. I would gladly trade an extra 1.5mm for a metal device.

Just because it has an extra 200mAh battery doesn't mean the GS5 will last longer. TouchWhiz UI is heavy & consequently acts as a huge battery resource hog.

No, HTC wanted to have a device that users can be proud of as a Flagship status. With the GS5's removable cover, we will see how that actually works out for water resistance in the long run with users removing the back cover time & time again.

I know that aluminum is a cheap, recyclable product. I never claimed otherwise, but so is plastic. It's how you choose to use that recycled material that proves to be so vital. Metal still costs more than plastic. Samsung wants to line their pockets as much as possible & now solely use plastic on $700.00+ devices.

The speakers on the M8 absolutely blow the GS5 away. That's a huge plus, & HTC deliver Android updates much faster than Samsung. That's a fact. The GS5 does have a better camera, but the M8 is more than adequate for a mobile device.

Everybody is suddenly a professional photographer and think they need the best camera available to upload pics to their Facebook account..HA HA

I also think you mean to say I have a problem with comprehension, not reading. They aren't the same.

Have you been drinking from the Ganges River or something??....because you are now talking in circles.

I brought up Samsung metal devices. Why is it Samsung can make much thinner plastic phones with larger removable battery and make it water proof? And retain sd slot
As well as even their metal phones had sd slot and removable back. So what's HTC's excuse again?

And again you over look aluminum still being a cheap recyclable material. And you again overlook the durable and practical gains in the plastic. Nor did I say HTC had bad or old technology. You made that up to make your point or it stems from your reading problem.

1.3 mm in 2014 is a HUGE difference, but using plastic on a Flagship in 2014 isn't a huge deal? Why didn't you address the fact that Samsung USED to use metal on their flagship devices, but now no longer do? Is it inferior? Fact is that metal costs more than plastic, & Samsung stopped using to make more money. That's greed.

The HTC M8 hardly lacks in technology. It has been praised as the best ANdroid device ever built. Too bad a plastic Samsung will most likely never have the dubious honor. They can't even get a fingerprint scanner right, nor switch up designs year after year.

Whatever helps you sleep at night. If you feel good about getting plastic & fake leather for $700.00, then you'll sleep like a baby.

it's funny when people bash the heart rate monitor for being not as accurate as a medical cardiac monitor. the feature is designed to have an estimate heart rate and is usually for people who are conscious when they do work outs. some people want to compare their heart rates before and after their work out. it is also very much helpful especially when there are those who have certain cardiac problems that need to keep check on their heart rates. the device may not be very accurate but at least it gives them idea whether they need medical attention or not. besides, nobody brings around medical cardiac monitors with them wherever they go especially they come as small as a lunch box and they're pretty heavy too. i think the S5 is very much helpful for the health conscious and those who use the S-health a lot.

And pointed out the fact that it's actually more practical and durable. And the soft touch feels more comfortable. And a lot more goes into the phone weather it's made of cheap aluminum or poly carbonate. Soda cans are not expensive are they?

So do you have a reading disability or an understanding logic disability???

Moving on from that point. It's 1.3mm. In terms of a 2014 flagship 1.3mm difference in thickness is a HUGE difference. You will definitely notice that difference in hand. Plus the soft touch again is nicer in the hand over time for use. Metal is more the wow looking factor for most. Especially when you account the S5 has a much superior camera, larger battery that is removable, and water proof. And is still 1.3mm thinner.

Saying that it won't scratch as bad as metal is the same as saying it's scratch proof? And you question my thinking?????????? And you leave out the part of dents too. And sorry? Stating that it factually can retain more heat because it's true is a cop out? And you have to have sense to submerge your phone in water? You really jacked this whole paragraph up.
To logically and realistically use what you tried to improperly use to make your own opinion work and fail...To say water proof is a cop out is just jealousy and fanboyism in denial of a very useful and worry free feature for protection and fun.

The display is nothing special...Meanwhile it literally it the World's best right now. It's extremely bright, very low on reflective, it's Amoled with the color accuracy of some of the best LCD's, more evenly color calibrated than most lcd's, has a more natural white balance, and so forth. No..Not a big deal...especially for Amoled.
Amoled never has and never will be "very" suceptable to burn. It's an occurrence that "might"..MIGHT, but more than likely won't happen.

However on the flip side even though HTC is getting better...The real thing yo have to worry about..even with the One which I have seen happen is the sudden death of hardware HTC phones seem to have. Especially displays and batteries.

Who cares? Most people in general. Especially non online trollers. Even if YOU don't think you need does not mean it's not useful. Plus if you are paying flagship device, the device is unreasonably thick in comparison to battery size and other mobiles...They should not remove common features...And you saying that YOU don't think YOU need it does not make it ok to do.
Especially if Samsung can do it in a much thinner phone that is water proof.
Plus even Samsung's metal phones had removable battery and SD slot. So metal or water proof they can do it. What's everyone else's excuse?
ESPECIALLY with the above mentioned of HTC's common hardware failures.

You reach further and further for lame attempts each time. While it may not be perfect it mostly works just fine. I have watched people use it on multiple occasions now. I think it's cool myself, but I would prefer not to use it myself for privacy reasons.

You would never be jealous, but praise a cheap recyclable soda can material instead that lacks in technology and durability over the premium plastic while bashing illogically everything else....Yup...Not jealous at all.

Yup. Poor Samsung for using a more durable and practical material. One that is more comfortable in hand. And while making the device thinner, more ergonomic, still having removable back, water proof, and better battery life....How dare they.
