Windows Phone 8.1 review: Major league

21 April 2014
Windows Phone is yet to become the game changer Microsoft was hoping for. It didn’t quite achieve the explosive growth to become Nokia’s savoir, but it has been steadily climbing up the ranks. Maybe an upgrade of the scale of its 8.1 version is all it needed to go into overdrive and really challenge the big two in the smartphone game.

AdamBoy64, 23 Apr 2014Nice troll comment. It wasn't trolling. Windows Phone is nowhere near being a smartphone OS, since it fails to deliver some basic functions. This is just the ugly truth which we all have to accept when buying a WP device. I've had a Lumia 800, 920 and will never ever buy another one. The OS isn't good enough yet. It's fast, but there's just too many things missing.

                      Mistake in the review:
"The Dialer's call log also got two long awaited features - a dedicated shortcut to go to the contact's page in People Hub and call time duration. Yes, it took Microsoft years to add that, but it's good that it's finally here."

The dialer has always had a way to access the contact page. The only thing that has changed is that the phone button was replaced by a contact button, and now by default, pressing on the contact initiates a call instead of going to the contact page.

WP8 works and run great out of the box. Now they have added more features in WP8.1. It's a win win situation. If there wasn't Windows Phone, I would have bought Blackberry instead. iPhone's 4" in screen won't cut it especially with that low refresh rate. Android is just a mess, not consistent, and buggy OS.

So i takes only 5 years o introduce radical changes in Windows Phone ? But this changes in WP at the same time are basic functions in all other OS. Ofc to expand store we need time but for sth like Action Center, install apps on SD card, separate sound control or support dual-SIM they really need so much time ? This changes cant be introduce even in WP7, where is problem with separate sound control or install apps on card ?!
It's not new functionality, all these things are the basic functions, WP fanboys shout in the forums what a great things they got...sure xD Ok now WP looks better, but still missing many functions and true multitasking have only Symbian and still WP dont give freedom of choice for user. Microsoft know better, "user are stupid" - we must lead them by the hand...good they know how to call using smartphone ;) Well, it's a pity MS must kill Nokia to make place for WP...

It will drain faster than it can be charged depending on activity. Some phones the charging comes to a snail's crawl, it does charge but the progress in getting back upto 100% is so aggravating that it is an exercise in wasting the laptop's battery charge on a power guzzling phone.

When you use USB tethering the phone is only using up power for the 3G/4G communications, even this is power intensive but when you throw in WiFi hot spotting, it is just wasting power. USB tethering exists for good reasons.
