LG G3 hands-on: First look

27 May 2014
The LG G2 is a living legend for its razor thin bezels but it's time to pass on the torch. The compactness spell worked once again and the LG G3 fits a massive 5.5" QHD screen in a body barely bigger than that of its competitors. Who needs phablets...

Anonymous, 28 May 2014sony's first flasgship of the year is z2, z3 will be releas... moredoubtful. And none the less the Z2 stands up well still. Better camera.Stereo speakers. All versions have 3GB ram. IP58 certified. USB 3.0. Possibly matching battery life.
G3 might have QHD, but it does not actually describe the reflectance, brightness, saturation, or viewing pleasure. Z2 may have that.
Which is the point of the reply to their comment.

G3 and Z2 have pros and cons. It will not take til the Z3 to stand up to the G3.

Whenever someone tries to make plastic look like metal (or wood or whatever) you get something that is just cheesey. No one has ever done this well. I don't know what makes LG think they'll be different. In the photos it looks as bad as one would expect. Blech.

LG is such a strange company. When it comes to fitting large screens in relatively small devices, with super thin bezels, they have amazing designs. And they seem to possibly have the best camera this side of the Lumia devices (now that HTC has bizarrely thrown in the towel on their cameras and gone for gimmicks over quality). And yet LG picks these case materials that are horrible. The G3 in side by side photos manages to make the S5 look classy. It takes a lot to come up with a more plasticky device than a Samsung phone.

I have nothing against plastic. But if you're going to use plastic, do something that's nice, like the Nexus 5 soft touch plastic or the Nokia Lumia devices. Polycarbonate can look and feel good. But first a company needs to accept that it is plastic and work with it that way.

I'm hoping there will be some back cover options that do away with the stupid metallic look. And a Google Play Edition would be nice. Even better a Nexus 6 based on this device (but I guess the Nexus line is dead, sigh).

AnonD-252027, 28 May 2014Metal gives sense of reliability and feeling that thing for... moreMetal or plastic is preference.
What is not preference is that fact that Poly Carbonate plastic is overall more durable and practical than aluminum or glass.
And aluminum and glass are still no less cheap recyclable materials at the end of the day.

Anonymous, 28 May 2014I think they did great. However. They CHOSE to not make it... moreBattery size is not there to please your psychological need for 'moar mAh'. The battery life if it all it beats the LG G2 then your complaints are totally rendered irrelevant. If it comes close to LG G2 but doesn't match it outright then you may have a case. If the battery life is like that of the Z1 then you definitively have a case.

So wait till the battery results are out before deciding if the battery they have packed in there is not enough for the job. OEMs want to ideally keep thickness down as much as practically possible without killing battery life. Efficiency for given mAh is what maters, not outright mAh numbers.

AnonD-267407, 28 May 2014Rightly saidWaterproofing =/= large bezels. Look at Sharp's Aquos softbank flagships. Highest screen to bezel ratio of any phone in the world and it's waterproof, so that's not the reason. It's likely a cost issue. LG have added a lot of new hardware and it has to compete with the S5 on price so it's waterproofing or the new stuff. It's yet to be seen which is better day to day but at least give LG credit for trying something knew within the realms of their budget instead of sticking to what the other leading manufacturers are all doing. For a lot of people, OIS camera with a quick auto focus could finally mean a all the advantages of a dedicated point and shoot are gone and conveniencd will not be compromised by more blurry, lower quality photos.

The G3 is going to be hard to beat, looks like it's going to be mobile of 2014, unless Sony or HTC do something really special but can't really see that happening. The Z3 is Sony's hope of displacing the G3 but for some reason I don't think they will do enough especially due to their ugly bezels, they need to STOP WATERPROOFING and they will hopefully improve their status and sales.

AnonD-252027, 28 May 2014No isocell (isocell have better color, better dynamic range... moreIsocell is a Samsung owned technology and there is no like for like comparison to prove it's better as they changed many other things going from the S4 to the S5. Most other companies use Sony sensors including Apple and the phases competition Oppo Find 7 and Oneplus One, not to mention the Z2 for obvious reasons. If you think that QHD is a gimmick that drains more battery then ask yourself why magazines print at a similar ppi when this undoubtedly raises their costs. If it raised their costs and made no discernable difference to the end user they wouldn't bother doing it. It's not like people buy magazines for their magazine specs. They also mention in the very article your commenting on that the screen controller had the same power draw as the one on the 1080p G2 which shows that the use of a more power friendly more advanced LTPS screen substrate has helped to keep battery draw the same despite the larger screen and higher ppi. The SOC is more power friendly than the Snapdragon 600 and anything below it doesn't belong in a flagship anyway. Making a metal phone of this size isn't just a case of surrounding the phone in metal. We would have seen compromises in size, weight, battery size, price and signal quality as well as slower initial production yields which would have seen a later release date. I would rather the benefits in size and weight and battery alone on a phone of this size over having it in metal. Leave the metal to 5" screens and below. Basically, I disagree with you
