Samsung Galaxy K zoom review: Zoom-zoom

04 July 2014
The Galaxy K zoom speeds down right onto our review track, ready to take on any cameraphone contender. This speedster is equipped with a 10x optical zoom and OIS and if you were to see only its back, you would hardly recognize you are staring at an Android smartphone...

Great review. I love the final words section where you also suggest the separate Sony cameras.

Thank you for the explanation, Black Adder

Based on what you stated, the phote compare tool can't be relied on to give an accurate comparison of the quality of photos taken at 1x for the phones I mentioned. I guess I'll have to wait for a photo shootout involving the K Zoom before I make a decision on which one to buy.

AnonD-284043, 16 Jul 2014I'm looking for a 'roid phone with a really good camera. Ba... moreit`s easy to explain. The sensor is the same size as the S4ZOOM, but has more pixels. So the image will be slightly worst if you use a cropped photo to look as large as with the other phones. The number of photons fallen on each pixel will be smaller as more pixels are on the same sensor. But when you watch the whole photo on a huge screen , you will see the true quality of the picture, the clarity will be better as more pixels are involved.

there is a whole scam here with testing cameras...all photos are made at zoom 1x and then to compare them you use a small part of the photo , a crop. Well, in Samsung K and S4ZOOM case, we owners, just have to use the Zoom feature which is optical , and we take the snapshot of the actual cropped part of the view that we need. That could mean we might use full 10X magnification, can any phone compare to what S4ZOOM or SG K can obtain ? Nope and never.

I was curious to see the camera's performance in low light conditions, but the review didn't mention it. I was very impressed by the Nokia Lumia 1020 optical stabilization on long exposure shots, and was wondering if the K Zoom has anything similar to it.

for those worried about not having a notification light, there are apps for that designed to take advantage of the AMOLED screed which (unlike LCDs) has the ability to turn on individual pixels. I use an app called noLED. This lights up little spots on the screen while keeping all the rest of the screen turned off so there's minimal power usage. It allows you to custom pick colors for each apps notifications, and you can even have it display the clock and current weather. When there are no notifications the screen is completely off.

I'm looking for a 'roid phone with a really good camera. Based on price and camera quality, I've narrowed it down to XPeria Z, S4 Zoom, and K zoom at the moment.

But I'm not able to make an accurate comparison of the picture quality based on the photo compare tool at gsmarena. It seems the samples taken from K zoom are little bit zoomed in, compared to photos taken using s4 zoom and Z, and they look blurrier compared to the other two. Most online reviews suggest that photos taken using K Zoom is better than atleast S4 Zoom, if not other flagships currently on sale. But if I use only the photo compare tool here as reference, then the S4 zoom and Z seem to take sharper images than K.

Can somebody who has used two or more of these phones clarify? (I don't see a photo shootout featuring K zoom in the pipeline)

The reviewers never mentioned the fact that there are no LED notifications available on this phone since it has no LED notification light on the front... So if your phone sounds is muted how do you know if you have messages?

"Samsung is targeting the K zoom at a more casual crowd that can't be bothered with a true to sRGB screen."

So you shoot the best pictures available on an Android device but you can't properly see them in their best quality.

Or to put it different. The imaging buffs can shoot the pics but view them.

What a bunch of morons at Samsung! A top imaging device needs also a top screen. Nokia did it right with the 808PV (albeit at a restricted resolution which was the max. for Symbian back then)
