Samsung Galaxy K zoom review: Zoom-zoom

04 July 2014
The Galaxy K zoom speeds down right onto our review track, ready to take on any cameraphone contender. This speedster is equipped with a 10x optical zoom and OIS and if you were to see only its back, you would hardly recognize you are staring at an Android smartphone...

I've owned the K Zoom for a couple of weeks now. I have no regrets in my purchase other than I should have waited to buy it because the price is going down significantly now. But the phone itself is awesome. Sure it's a little bigger than most phones these days, but honestly, its more than manageable, and the weight isn't a big deal either. It's actually made me realize how ridiculously slim and light weight phones are these days, to the point where it's unnecessary. I'd rather have a phone of this size with something like an awesome zoom camera or even just a bigger battery than something slim like an iPhone with crap battery life. The size of the phone also makes it more comfortable to hold than most phones. I can barely tell a difference in weight from this and my old S4. The zoom is super fun to have and has allowed me to take a lot of pictures that I would normally never get to take. Zooming in on the action from afar would have been pointless with digital zoom, but now I can get right in there and capture what's interesting. If all you do is take selfies and landscape shots, then you probably wont find much extra value in a phone like this, but if you like experimenting and taking artistic photos, this is probably the best option out there aside from the 1020, but the zoom lens and the Android ecosystem make the K Zoom the easy winner for me in that comparison. I also owned a 1020 for a few months when it came out. So overall, no regrets buying this phone. If carriers pick it up, the price will come down even more and it'll be worth taking a look at.

There's a lot of illiterate comments here and from people who just say dumb things like "fail" when they have no experience of owning this device like I do.

I can say without exception that the resulting photographs the K Zoom takes are excellent and are as good as a compact camera. The camera features are better than any smartphone because of the unique optical zoom.

The camera is definitely not big and heavy and after a few days use you won't think it's any different from a regular large screen smartphone.

Samsung have done a great job with this device and I am exceptionally happy I purchased one to replace the Galaxy Camera and Galaxy S4 Zoom I owned previously.

                    i have the phone c115

its great .. doesnt feel heavy at all

before i had the Note3 ... the speed is almost the same. the screen is beautifull

The camera ! woow JUST woow ! ... the phone overall size and weight are perfect and fits the jeans pocket very well.

if u can handle those 4mm of the optical lens then Go for it without any regrets! the Xenon the OIS the Optical zoom Makes it the all around hybrid camera/phone for all the year.

Thanks for the review! Samsung is still topping the phone industry via their excellent built in software support & their forward thinking venture into making this niche phone better than the predecessor i guess... i'm a Sony fan but sad to see that Sony has not tried to tap into this market with their imaging performance it used to have on Sony Ericsson K800i etc why oh why...

Smasung seems a bit confused, but it has quick start of the camera.

                                "
                                Always be ready
Instant Camera Mode is the fastest way to capture the moments that matter. You can go from lock screen to camera mode with a single touch, or press the volume and power buttons together for just 0.3 seconds.
                                "

It's the shutter button in the illustation, and that is what I've heard before, so I think that is correct for this exact mobile (I suspect the other option perhaps works for mobiles without dedicated shutter button)
But there you have it GSMarena, there is a quick start for the camra.
But if you want to say it's a bit more complicated than before, I'm with you, pressing two buttons can be a bit fiddely at times.

Anonymous, 04 Jul 2014nice review, but it's too expensive. the price is similar... moreIt is a bit expensive.
It costs slightly more than the S4 LTE+ where I live.
And about the same as the Note 3.

                                        But in comparisson to those, it's not really more expensive;

The K Zoom has the better camera sensor + optical zoom +60fps, over the S4 version. The S4 on the other hand has some performance (it's the upgraded version with the snapdragon 800, also it comes with 16GB of storage).

The Note 3 neo has higher capacity battery (but about the same time for browsing), and the stylus, whereas yet again, camera and video is better on the K zoom. When it comes to the display the pixel density is better with the K zoom, but the Note 3 Neo has higher number of sub pixels. Also the K zoom is brighter and performce better in sunlight. But which is the best at the end of the day, I could not say without comparing them closely under different situations.

Really prices of high end smartphones got a bit out of hand in 2007. It started with the N95, and contiued with iPhone and so on...
Before that, you got a top of the line consumer phone (in some cases smartphone) for about the same money as the K Zoom. (for a while, including all sensors made the price difference make sense, but even for half the price of the K Zoom today, you get GPS, LTE, BT4.0, and so on, so mostly it's an industrial culture thing, where companys are trying to get better profit margins on higher end devices).
